A two week vacation sounds so extravagant, heh-- a week of away~ and then a week of omg busy. Anyway. THIS STORY. OMG. I am going to just quote things and flail. A lot! Oh, so much flailing, ok go:

But Laura saw in his eyes that he was fuming-searching, maybe, for a means of avenging his honor, or for a way to assuage this humiliation. He stooped over to pick up his packages from where they lay in the front hallway. Then he retreated to his room, three boxes stacked against his body. I really love this. The pissiness over having to use the dorm's mail room, and how Laura sees this, and understands that it's actually the massive rage and shame of having all of your plans and most of your self-image get smashed, topped off with the indignity of being rescued by your parents and packed off to rehab/boarding school. IDK, I have such a narrative kink for the big badass brought low, and the image of Daken using online shopping boxes to armor his dignity against the judgment of a bunch of teenagers is like sweet, sweet candy. # ( ... )

I have a massive kink for that too (as well as rehab stories and therapy, but I can't really see therapy working for Daken. Ever. But anyway.).

And with the exchange after that, the "hurr hurr she likes it both ways"-- Reads more to me like Daken being unexpectedly annoyed that anyone but him is teasing his putative kid sister, even though Laura doesn't see it that way-- is that an accurate read, or is her self-esteem just crap?I think it's an accurate read, but I also think it's about Daken wanting to avoid the kind of predictable brother-sister teasing stuff that Johnny Storm does a lot of, and maybe his own ambivalence about his relationship with Laura. Like, they're never going to be Johnny and Sue. Daken knows this, so ( ... )

She wondered what he wanted. More pressingly, she wondered why he had suddenly taken such an interest in her. How did he see her? Yeah, good question. I always imagine Daken's faux-sibling relationship with Laura (in true highschool-drama style) starting out as some kind of nefarious plot or shitty joke-- one that goes on longer than it's supposed to, and surprises him by turning into an actual attachment. (In this story it looks like it's coming from severe boredom.)

“Are you going to become a physicist? Don’t take this the wrong way, but I doubt it."LOL, too cool for school ( ... )

Oh yeah, and she really is dad's unfavorite. Fuck you, Logan! (This made me think back to the story you wrote about them hanging out in a diner, and the more I think about him being shocked whenever she isn't a robot or a vegetable, the madder it makes me)You know, sometimes I think that my Logan is a little OTT when it comes to his treatment of Laura, and then I read X-23 #1 yesterday (after I'd written this), and I was like, "Logan, you're a bigger dick to Laura in canon than you are in my stories!" I don't know if you've read it yet so I don't want to spoil it, but it's like he's always dodging the blame (or blaming himself for the wrong things, like his genetics rather than his shitty choices) or projecting himself onto her or just setting really low expectations for her, and I really hate/love it (hate it because he's a classically dicktastic dad; love it because it's such angstfic fodder). And then there's all those little moments where he's dropped the ball--like when she got her arm cut off, the first words out of his mouth ( ... )
