I agree about some of the rants. Some I liked (the writing ones were freaking hilarious), but sometimes it did get to the point where I was like, "Ok Melanie, now you're just telling us your political views because you can." It wasn't too bad (but then, nothing is compared to Goodkind), but it could have been trimmed a bit.
I think perhaps the thing with the Ayalas is more fodder for the next book. They'll start to find out about the cloning thing around the same time Troy (was that his name?) decides he's had enough and goes to stay at the McClure place for a bit, which will piss off his mom to no end, and she'll dive in to exposing Holly while she and all her pals are doing witchy stuff related to the cloning and that dude. Which could be interesting.
