Latooni had gone out in a F-28 Messer for a drill and for more flight data.  Everything had proceeded as normal until, for some reason a warning sounded.  The engine had failed completely, and there was no one out there with her to help.

As luck would have it, Latooni was not the only person running drills that day. At the time, Simon was out on the airstrip with Gurren-Lagann, practicing his movements with the Ganmen and trying out different methods of attack, when he caught Latooni's distress signal. Frantically scanning his surroundings, he located Latooni's plane as it dived toward the ground. Aware of the fact that he would be unable to intercept her plane, he nonetheless tightened his grip on the controls and ran toward where he expected it to hit the ground.

Doing her best to not crash headfirst into the rapidly approaching ground, Latooni managed to pull the plane up enough so it skidded across the ground. Unfortunately she wasn't able to keep it from crashing into several trees. When she crashed, she hit her head hard enough that she had to fight to keep conscious.

The moment Latooni's plane hit the ground, Simon brought Gurren-Lagann down to one knee, opened the hatch on its head, leaped out, rolling as he hit the ground and immediately springing to his feet, and sprinted at top speed toward the wreckage. When he arrived on the scene, he didn't bother looking into the cockpit -- his first objective was to get the canopy open. He struggled with the mechanism for about a minute or so before he got it open a crack.

Naturally, it froze. Simon swore inwardly, and threw everything he had into one pull. Thankfully, he got the canopy open enough to get inside, and immediately checked to see whether or not Latooni was still conscious.

Just as she was about to lose consciousness, Latooni heard the hatch open. She forced her eyes open, and saw a blurry figure of a man. Thinking it would be someone else, she murmured a name. "...Giado?"
