Scripture for Mature Christians

I say this because this is deep material to study and read. I feel that it may confuse someone who is still learning the basics of what it means to be a Christian and what the Bible teaches. I have recently started attending my parent's Sunday School class when I have the opportunity to visit. It has given me the chance to become interested in ( Read more... )

We had a very interesting class with this Sunday. The big thing we got from 6:4-6 was "Once saved, always saved." One of our theories was what about those who profess Christ but dont posess Christ. We shall be known by the fruit we produce. If you arnt truely saved yet preofess it, you wont produce the good output God has for you to do. This will mean that you are effectively mocking the sacrifice of Christ and providing aid and comfort to the kinds of ppl that crucified him.

This passage is a warning. The Christians that the writer is addressing in this passage were backsliding. Instead of telling others the good news and teaching them about Christ, they were forgetting the basic foundational principles of christianity. Yet they knew the truth. The writer is telling us that if we know the truth of Jesus, know with our entire being that he is the Son of God and that he sacrificed himself in order to save us and we still reject that truth that there is nothing else that can save us. I guess I see this particular passage a bit differently than the writer of Explore the Bible. Especially in my many late night conversations with Father Jerry on how scripture relates to us in this day and age, and not just to those it was directed to when it was written, I see some deeper meanings in quotes such as this. For instance, can one who is truly enlightened ever fall from the path? I may have a different view of enlightenment than most, for I see our lives and this world as a forge for the soul, with enlightenment being the ultimate goal. If you are truly enlightened as to the proper path God wishes for you to follow, if you have truly glimpsed His will and accepted Him into your heart, then I don't think it possible to fall away completely. That being said I know of only a few people that I would truly say were enlightened. Even the most devout of Christians often do not look for the deeper meanings in their lives and in what they are taught, content to follow the word of the law but not look at its intent. Those ( ... )
