Okay, you know I agree 100%, firstly. But before someone with an axe to grind comes in here and points something out first, we're not paying more per capita (or as a percentage of GDP) for public health care than all other Western/industrialized nations. Last I checked, we're third, behind Iceland and Germany

For those of you who know me and weren't aware, I nearly cut the end of the middle finger on my left hand off last August. I was at work, missed a stair while carrying a metal computer case, and dropped it. The stupid move was trying to keep it from hitting the floor. I won't make that mistake again.
At any rate, I was lucky. No, not just because it didn't actually sever the finger, for which I really do feel fortunate, but because I was at work when it happened. See, last August, my health insurance, that I was paying for monthly out of pocket, resembled scribeguy's. I almost surely would have ended up losing what was left of my savings as a result of the ER visit, the antibiotic prescription (minor, in this case, because of Giant Eagle's $4 generic program that actually had what they gave me on the list), and the subsequent doctor visits. I'd still be digging myself out of the hole. But since I was at work, they had to take care of it, no questions asked.
Having universal healthcare is really the only way to handle an inversely selective business.
I reason that the government could provide a base level of insurance coverage for all citizens and then private insurers could provide additional levels of coverage on top of that to the people willing to pay into it.
