It's a strange thing. I almost felt like I SHOULDN'T be affected. I knew the guy too. He was my bosses husband. It'll keep you up at night for a while. You'll find yourself making the same kind of jokes the paramedic did. It's oddly soothing. No one else will understand though. Recently I told my boss, "That was a while ago. I think it was just before your husband kicked over in my yard." She and I laughed. Everyone else cringed.
In the end, you just have to remind yourself that you did everything you could, and that's a lot better than most people do.

I feel compelled to defend the news crew, however. Most likely, they were in the area already and heard the call go out on the police scanner. If they happen to be closer at the time, the'll get there first. At least, that's what I'd like to believe.
And, yeah, the crude jokes are something folks who have to deal with such horrors every day use to cope. You have to separate yourself from the gravity of the situation or you go crazy. It's something we do in the news profession, too. It's pretty disgusting for that guy to run his mouth in front of people who aren't in that boat, though.
