✘ Credit by Examination

Sometimes when students enter university, they are already proficient in the subject matter taught in standard freshman classes. By doing credit-by-examination, students can receive credit for some of those classes at a fraction of the cost of taking the classes.

From Wiki:
The College Level Examination Program (or CLEP) is a series of examinations that test an individual’s college level knowledge gained through course work, independent study, cultural pursuits, travel, special interests, military service schools, and professional development. CLEP also offers international and home-schooled students the opportunity to demonstrate their proficiency in subject areas and bypass undergraduate coursework. The test is offered by the College Board.

Most of the tests are 90 minutes long and currently cost $70 each or are free to military service members and veterans. There is an additional fee of $10 for the optional essay portion of some of the exams. Each test usually corresponds to a one or two semester introductory courses on the topic, though the Spanish, French, and German Language exams can be used to earn up to 12 credits.

CLEP tests are primarily multiple-choice exams (though some include fill-in or ordering questions, and one English Composition exam has an essay section) which are scored on a scale from 20 to 80. The majority of schools grant credit for a score of 50 or higher, but passing scores are determined by the individual schools and may vary. The schools are responsible for awarding the amount of credits you would receive for each test.

Students can earn credit-by-examination in the courses listed below. For most tests, the minimum score to earn credit is 60 out of 80. The Writing & Composition exam also includes an essay portion that is graded by the English department independently of the rest of the test. A minimum score of 'B' is needed to earn credit in conjunction with the score from the rest of the test. The foreign language tests require a score of 60 for 6 credits, 65 for 9 credits, and 70 for all 12 credits.

To register for an exam, students need to pay the $15 proctor fee in the Bursar's Office and then bring the receipt to the Testing Center to make an appointment for testing. If paying for the exam by check or money order, students should submit it to the Testing Center with their application. Payment by credit or debit card may be made on the day of the test. If students are taking an exam with an essay portion, the essay portion is administered on a separate date, and the additional $10 fee is to be paid in the Bursar's Office before their test date.

Testing will be done on a computer and will take approximately two hours. CLEP exams are administered in the Testing Center, located in the basement of the library, and begin at 8:30 a.m. Students need to bring two forms of identification with them. One must be a government issued identification with picture.
