Today I babysat for this one and a half year-old girl for the first time. I didn't know this before but her parents are teaching her English and Spanish, speaking almost all Spanish in the home. (I'm so jealous of that; I'll be working for years to become truly bilingual, and in a few years she'll know Spanish better than me without doing any work ( Read more... )

I love it when I find myself thinking in Indonesian, or a combination of Indonesian and English =D
It reassures me that I am actually learning it...

I've actually dreamt in Indonesian before, which is both scary and awesome at the same time.

Yeah, exactly, it shows that you're actually doing something right.
That is so exciting! That's supposed to be the big sign of fluency or near-fluency (or something like that haha).

Oh and hey, I've always wondered, why Indonesian? Is that something you get to use a lot where you are?

Ahaha not really. It is our closest foreign-language-speaking country, but to be honest I started because I had to at school (in grade 3!) and I was good at it so I kept it up. I ended up developing a fascination for all things Indonesian, especially where they tie into the arts.

One of my (often very random) dreams is to go and live there for a while and play in an orchestra, or study their music. =)

I totally feel and understand your jealousy. Kids pick language up so quickly. My niece lives next door to a nail salon and plays with the little girl over there. Long story short: She came up to me speaking Vietnamese (which is not her first language at all) lol.
To think I'll probably only know the swear words by the time she'll be on a conversational level.

Hahaha wow! Was she speaking just words or full sentences? (or could you tell?)

haha nice to meet you too. I have no idea what she was saying. It was a sentence but they're only four so it could really be anything lol. I do know chao (hello in vietnamese) though which is probably the only thing I got from it.

Ahhh that is so cute. I need to learn Spanish and Portuguese for my eventual career, do you think Spanish is harder to learn than other languages?

Well I've never tried to learn another language so I don't know for sure, but from what I've heard it's a very easy language to learn from English. A lot of words are very similar and most things have a direct translation, so that's good. I know Portuguese is very similar to Spanish, though, so it might be difficult to learn both and keep them separate...but again, I don't really know at all. What career is this?

Haha, I'm pretty sure it was "yeah", as she said that a lot. In the cutest way. :D
She probably won't know how lucky she is...
