Yuri and Feelings

This is an essay talking about how Yuri approaches feelings and three main relationships in his life right now (Asch, Flynn and Raven). This is the hardest thing to write ever :x

Flynn

So, Yuri and Flynn are pretty much best friends forever. They grew up together, they shared everything, and they held the same goals and need for justice. You can’t have one without the other! Even when they decided on different paths, their aims never wavered.

Then Yuri went with Estelle and saw the world, and while their friendship didn’t change, it did undergo a shift in Yuri’s mind. Yuri trusts Flynn beyond anything in the entire world, more than himself. Flynn is a clear example of how the world will change because Yuri trusts Flynn to be able to pull it off in ways Yuri never could. As a result, Yuri becomes a lot more … conscious of himself; of the decisions he had to make (he doesn’t regret them! He doesn’t like what he did and he certainly knows better now, but regret no :/). That was one of the reasons why earlier he told Flynn “no” to his feelings because Yuri has high expectations and hopes on Flynn! And he rather not get in the way of that, feelings or not. Ultimately, for Yuri, people come first before anything else. That’s the way he operates, all throughout the game. It just took a great deal of convincing on Flynn’s part to agree and the fact that Yuri … is not one for denial. He’s willing to accept that he’s not always right and he can’t argue so much in the face of the truth.

Really, Yuri and Flynn… are Yuri and Flynn. There are a lot of labels you can give their relationship, but they’re just… bound together. I said this in the dating serious poll that at the end of the day, the person Yuri would go back to is Flynn. That’s just how it is.

Raven

Yuri - Whether you live or die, depends on us

Okay, so, Raven is important. I’m using that scene to set the context for Yuri’s feelings because fuck he is really pissed off when Raven considers checking out early. In the game, Yuri doesn’t take Raven too seriously, but ultimately, gives him the benefit of his trust despite knowing that … Raven shows up mysteriously and this is never a good sign. They met in prison after all. Nevertheless, Yuri still believed in Raven. Before-Vesperia, Yuri didn’t have a lot of people he would consider super-close too. Sure, everyone in the Lower Quarter was his family and he always helped them out, but I think emotionally, there was a certain amount of distance. He loved them! And he certainly trusts them, just… differently from the way he trusts Brave Vesperia (I think it has to do with the fact that they fight together, while Yuri always took on the Lower Quarter’s troubles on his own) and trust is something Yuri highly values. And Raven betrayed that. Not only that, Raven wants to die. Cue scene I linked above.

The thing is, at least from my point of view, Raven has become important to Yuri. Part of why Yuri said his life belonged to Brave Vesperia was to discourage him from ever doing anything… stupid (because by then they were all pretty clear on Raven’s issues). The other part is that Yuri wants Raven to be there, to be a part of their lives (or, on the same tangent, part of his). Yuri starts to become a little more aware of how the people around him are now an intangible part of his life and he could lose them. In recent events, for Yuri, having feelings for Raven is just. Natural! Tied into his need to keep Raven, his own personality (helping people! being a smooth operator!) and Yuri genuinely… caring for Raven and his ridiculous eccentricities.

Asch

So in many ways, Yuri gets Asch. I think, if life had been different, Yuri could easily see himself becoming a person like Asch. So Yuri seeks out Asch, purposely involves him in his life and more importantly, tries to show that he cares for him and is willing to stand by him, despite etcetcetc in his life. For Yuri, his feelings for Asch really translate into helping him, giving him a choice. Can they extend romantically? Well, Yuri did kiss him, but I think Yuri kissed Asch more for Asch himself than any other reason. Yuri wants Asch to be aware of the choices he has and not to be bound by what happened to him in his own world. Could it develop further? TIME WILL TELL.

Feelings!

So the thing with Yuri is that he’s well-aware that the way other people feel is different from the way he feels about things. Yuri is very casual, open and giving about his own affectations and he certainly doesn’t think twice about it. If he likes someone, he shows it. However, Yuri’s pretty aware that the way he feels is pretty shallow compared to the real… depth of the way people express themselves, so he’s somewhat wary when things escalate into territory where he knows he’s not able to reciprocate. But half the time, he never realizes this. As accepting as Yuri is, he can’t really explain or show how he feels! This is why he keeps people who can see and understand his feelings around him! Because he really, really fails at that area and he knows it. Flynn knows this and so does Raven. I don’t think Asch is aware of this.

Currently, Yuri is still somewhat ??? over everything that’s happened. While he suspected that Raven had feelings for him, he had no idea how bad it had gotten. And though, he was completely truthful in his thread with Raven, Yuri has doubts on whether this was the right choice and whether he is the kind of person worth …pursuing because of his limitations.

Lalala, thoughts, yuri you're doing it wrong, anythinggggg, sob this was a ridiculously hard thing to word out.
