The island breeze wafted in and out of the suite AJ had reserved for them; it blew through her hair and caressed her face as Courtney looked out off of the balcony towards the ocean. The sky was dark, she couldn’t tell where the water ended at the horizon anymore, and her new husband had gone to talk to someone about a surprise. As if she hadn’t had enough of those lately.

A glass of champagne was in her hand, the glass cool against her fingers and the liquid bubbly in her mouth when she took a sip. AJ had told her that she could drink whatever and however much she wanted, but she was still drinking the same glass she’d had when he’d stepped out a half hour ago. Courtney wasn’t one to drink a lot, even on special occasions. She didn’t like the way it made her head feel after awhile, but that didn’t mean she was opposed to drinking a decent amount. She’d learned her limits in her late teens after a couple of parties she wasn’t supposed to be at.

And she was taking into account that her new husband was a recovering alcoholic. Courtney had been surprised to find the bottles of champagne in their honeymoon suite after the ceremony, but he’d assured her that it was okay and pointed out that he’d had sparkling grape juice delivered as well. She’d told him that maybe he should order another bottle of that and have them take the champagne away. Of course, he’d refused, saying that she deserved the best and it wouldn’t bother him.

He was always the gentleman with her, so kind and sincere. He made her feel as if she wasn’t alone anymore and not as if she were an object being fought over by her brother, father and mother. He made her feel as if she actually mattered to someone. Sonny was too busy blaming her father for abandoning another child. Janine yelled at Mike for everything, anything, just like she had when Courtney was younger, ignoring the fact that her daughter had just discovered her father was indeed alive. AJ didn’t act as if she weren’t even in the room, he acted as if it were everyone else who didn’t exist and she was the only one he could see.

Courtney finished her first glass of champagne and set the empty glass on the table next to the bottle. That was enough for now, she thought as she went outside on the balcony, leaning onto it to look further out over the beach. She could see huge bonfires both ways with people sitting on lawn chairs and blankets spread out around them and somewhere below she heard the chords of a guitar floating in the wind. Despite how good she felt when she was with AJ, she knew that she’d be lying if she said that they knew each other well or even as well as most married couples did. She was new to Port Charles and she had to admit that she was a bit apprehensive before but he’d eased that all away. She felt now that this was the right thing for her, never mind that her knowledge of her new husband was less than most brides knew. In fact, she thought it was a little romantic, the way their marriage and relationship had come about.

Courtney’s thoughts were interrupted when she heard loud voices below her. Peering over the edge, she saw AJ just inside the lobby doors, talking heatedly to another man. She moved to the other side of the balcony so she could get a better look at his face and it only took her a few seconds that the man was her newfound half brother. She could feel her expectations for a real wedding night dissolve as she recognized him; there was only one reason her brother was there: to take her away.
