(isn't she just? her, wine, cats -- it's like a dream!) ♥ i'm so glad you like this post :)))
MAKEDAMNSURE WAS MY ANTHEM AAAAAUAGH HGGHASHGAHGA now you've filled me with the urge to listen to them and find my old tour dvd and relive being 16 again. also, perks -- yes, yes, yes. ♥ like catcher in the rye, but far less annoying.
this is a really, really awesome idea/post. this is all assuming that I (theoretically) died right now and as the person I am now:
01. (book) looking for alaska - john green - it's about the unfairness of death, how it really doesn't make any sense, and how we try to hold onto people that are dead. I just think it's a really accurate look at grief and trying to deal with grief. plus, it's just generally brilliantly written. 02. (book) the unbearable lightness of being - milan kundera - it's, at it's core, a book about human existence. and, also, just one of my favorite books. 03. (song) at the bottom of everything - bright eyes - crazy/perfect/beautiful. it's both funny and sad and hopeful, a reflection of life. 04. (song) daisy - brand new - life/death/renewal. the instrumentation is cacophonous and shouldn't work, but it totally does. 05. (song) baby, we'll be fine - the national - a song about depression and one that's affected me more than any other. the chief line in the chorus is: i'm so sorry for everything.
omg and your CHOICES ARE STUNNING & PERFECTASFKASFJAFALFAKf okay -- looking for alaska. yes. BRIGHT EYES, BRAND NEW, NATIONAL??? YES. i've wanted to read the unbearable lightness of being for so long! omg okay i seriously love your selections. & have i mentioned -- "at the bottom of everything" --- YES.
1. (book) the lord of the rings trilogy by tolkien, because it's the greatest story ever told 2. (book) the odyssey by homer, to see you safely home 3. (book) a heartbreaking work of staggering genius by dave eggers, because we have advantages 4. (book) macbeth by shakespeare, "what's done is done" and because it will teach my daughters to be brave 5. (book) alice's adventures in wonderland by lewis carroll, because it will teach my daughters to be curious
also all are purposefully works by boring white dudes which feature powerful, boundary-defying warrior ladies who bend structural oppression to their wills. because life is not dictated by the good of heart or the worthy, but by the vicious life-sucking conquerers who try to steal your soul, and you will have to learn how to destroy them while playing by their rules.
ugh your books are so perfect. your daughters will grow up breathing fire. i'm a little jealous of them & they don't even exist yet. & alice in wonderland, that makes me so happy. & what better way to teach women their strength than by having them see what women in literature can do when faced with adversity?
I guess I would leave, 1) (book) Harry Potter, 2) (book) The Hobbit, 3) (book) Ella Enchanted, 4) (song) "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", 5) (song) "Knights of Cydonia"
They all mean sometime to me, obviously, but I also think they all carry relateable, universal messages. Magic, the love of adventures and words, hope, love, self-belief, and the need to fight for what you believe in.
