Who; December Snow [
withmydoubt]
1. She used to think her parents had a sick sense of humour naming her “December Snow.”
2. Then she met a boy named April, and figured her parents weren’t that weird after all.
3. She isn’t quite sure exactly where her origins lie. She knows her mother is Italian, and that her father is half-Russian, but she rarely gets to hear about much of her family’s history. (Her paternal grandmother was a Russian ballerina who moved to America just before the depression, where she met December’s grandfather, and they had her father. Her mother is Italian, and her parents met on a cruise. He was a passenger, she was a stewardess.)
4. She’s fascinated with ballet (her grandmother used to tell her stories about some of the ones she’d starred in before her parents relocated to Rome), and soon after she’d started attending school, begged her parents to let her take lessons. She doesn’t anymore, but every now and then, when she’s in the kitchen and feeling overwhelmed, will rise up on pointe and go through a few positions. It has a calming effect. (She’s been doing it more and more these days, too.)
5. Religion used to scare her as a child, and sometimes it still does, but she tries to think on the comforting aspects of it. This has gotten harder as she has grown older.
6. Sometimes she forgets that she’s seventeen, and still feels like she never grew older than eleven. It all feels the same to her anyway.
7. Her favourite article of clothing is a slightly oversized hoodie sweater she can burrow herself into and pretend she’s a giant fuzzball.
8. She thinks things like this are the reason why she’ll never act her age.
9. She can’t tell you why, but she trusts Bene, even after dreaming what she does.
10. December tries to be as polite as possible around other people because she’s afraid if she gets too personal she won’t like what she dreams about them.
11. The power of Dreamseeing has always come naturally to her, but she looks at what’s going on around her and wonders why she never dreams of the outcome. Then she wonders if she really wants to know, and quickly goes to practice ballet.
12. She was born Hartford, Connecticut. Her best memory of the USA is the view from the plane in early March and seeing all the naked trees. It was the last time she saw it.
13. She wishes her birthday were in May, just for the amusement of saying so and catching the look on people’s faces when they take her name into consideration.
14. She wishes she could lie and do this anyway, but when she tried it gave her a sick feeling and she quickly went, “just kidding.”
15. December has a morbid fascination of being able to watch her dreams come true. This was easy as a child, and what ultimately led to her mother’s freak-out and moving them to Rome, but now the dreams have taken on a darker tone, and though they scare her stiff, the curiosity never dies.
16. When she’s not seeing, she’s dreaming herself a “play world,” though it stopped being fun quite some time ago. She just doesn’t want to leave it behind yet.
17. She figures if she keeps herself as uninvolved as possible she has a smaller chance of dying, but knows she can’t keep this up forever. She knows.
18. Her hair style was an accident that she grew attached to. They were cutting up paper at school one day, and a boy happened to wave his scissors a little too close to her face. He grazed her cheek and managed to get a good chunk of her hair, and from then on she merely clipped the rest and had the back trimmed. It makes a good reminder of the accident and how she could have lost an eye.
19. Sometimes she dreams that she’s blind.
20. And some other times, she watches and waits for the opportunity to present itself, just so it will come true already.
