Three melodies

1. Jessica

Shinya hit the high-hat as Die struck that one note that signified the beginning of Jessica. They were all tired, but they knew that Jessica could squeeze that last smile out of all of them. It was an upbeat song, which contrasted with Kyo’s melancholy lyics. Jessica didn’t require an extraordinary amount of concentration on Shinya’s part, as the drumbeat was easy enough to remember. He tried not to let his mind wander to the jumping crowd in front of him and the vivid redhead on his right. He saw Die run over to Toshiya with a grin, pressing his back against the bassist and sweating with energy. Shinya’s heart contracted, and he hit the drums harder.

Even in my heart my song is lost quietly I wait for you…

Kyo sang, and Shinya felt every word. Everyone was having fun, jumping up and down to the beat of his drums, but that wasn’t what Kyo sang, and that wasn’t what Shinya felt. Shinya tried to beat out every word that came to his lips as he mouthed the words along with Kyo. But no matter how many times he tried to spit the words out of his heart, they wouldn’t leave. Die was now yelling into the mic and Shinya heard that voice, the one that was uniquely Dies, above all the others. He felt as if Die was speaking to him alone. He grew lost in his thoughts. Then suddenly, the object of his thoughts appeared in front of him. Die was standing in front of the drum kit, looking up at him, his dark eyes looking into his and nodding. Shinya didn’t dare to hope that Die understood how he felt.

I cannot reach as far as you, I cannot reach…

But he nodded back to the guitarist and felt his heart melt a little at the smile he got in return. Maybe it wasn’t so bad being in love, after all.

2. Red…[em]

It was one of Die’s rare compositions, so it was likely that Shinya would remember it more than most. But it didn’t help that Kyo’s lyrics made it all the more poignant:

Cut down your discomfort wings
Be freer
Cut down your discomfort wings
To a tomorrow that can’t be reached.

Shinya wished that what Kyo wrote didn’t come true quite so often. If he told Die of his feelings he would be free of his secret, free of pretending and hiding. Even so, he knew that with that freedom came a tomorrow that would never be for him and Die. Shinya knew- there was something inside him, some conviction- (and he flattered himself that he knew Die so well that his conviction must be true) that Die would never love him.

Whenever I walk past, my heart screams:
Why can’t we be perfect? Why can’t it be?
That’s stupid! That’s stupid! That’s stupid!

Kyo spit the words out in reply to his previous lyric, and Shinya heard every word he said as if Kyo was speaking directly to him. It was stupid. Die would never love him. Why would he? Shinya wasn’t exactly known for his manly qualities. He barely even looked like a man. Die might as well be dating a girl. And yet, for all his lack of hope in his feelings being returned, Shinya loved Die all the same, quietly, unrequitedly, but intensely.

Kyo sang the final lines:
Cut down your discomfort wings
But keep the door closed.

3. Fukai

The beginning went like this: drums, rhythm guitar. Then bass, lead guitar and vocals coming in more or less together. But in the few precious moments before the rest of the band kicked in, it was just Die and Shinya alone, the white spotlight on stage lighting up the redhead’s hair as if he were glowing with an angelic light. It was an ethereal moment, when the crowd went into a hushed silence and stared at the two in rapture. The audience were waiting. Die and Shinya had the power, and the audience were waiting for them to use it.

Nerves never managed to escape Shinya, and every time he was due to play Fukai they increased tenfold. He took his tension and whipped it into shape, bringing the power into the drum beat, not being able to bare the thought of letting Die down. Unbeknownst to Shinya, Die felt the same. He was jittery with energy, hands shaking, anticipating the hand movements he was about to make. People often thought Die had written the song, due to the immediate recognisability of the guitar line, but it was not the case.

Die had come to the recording studio late one afternoon to pick up the latest on the new single, and had found someone’s notes on possible B-sides to Kasumi. Just by looking at the notes he had got excited by the prominent rhythm guitar, and had flung the sheets on the music stand, unzipping the nearest guitar to try it out. He imagined Shinya’s drum beat bringing him in and struck the first note. It sounded incredible. He scanned down the rest of the page. The song just got better as it went on. Die could see that the whole band was going to like it. A bass line that was going to come through, Kaoru’s part…he grinned…it was small but he had no doubt Kaoru was going to make it count. Kyo of course could always bring himself to the song. There was something for everyone. So who wrote it? He looked forward through the pages to the ending and saw it ended how it begun: with a catchy guitar line, written for him. Who had written such a good part for him? He turned the page over. At the bottom of the page, in the smallest hand, there was something written there. It had been crossed out, and inked over, but when Die lifted the page to his face he could still make out the words:

To Die, Love, Shinya.
