Title: Bodies in Motion
Chapter: 7
Rating: PG

Jayne Cobb moved slowly, Vera tight in his grasp as he headed for the cargo bay entrance. He never let emotions get in the way of a fight but at the moment his heart felt that empty feeling he had heard other people talk about it. He had seen men die, women too but it never met anything to him. But Book’s death and then Wash’s was different. He liked both men, considered them friends and now he couldn’t relay on either one of them being around. Their deaths had awakened emotions in him that he didn’t think he had. He had thought of himself as Simon often described him- an uncaring, physical, trained ape. He wasn’t concentrating as much on protecting Simon, Kaylee and Inara now that the companion was lying in the infirmary. Like Mal he didn’t have much faith in a religious power so to him Inara was already dead. But he had still tried to save her. That he couldn’t wrap his brain around, why he had been instrumental in bringing her back to life. Maybe he wanted to believe now in an afterlife, in a greater existence. Maybe it was easier then thinking Book and Wash were just gone.

The cargo bay door shifted and began opening when Jayne was forty paces away. Normally he would have begun shooting but something made him stop. The door swung all the way open and his Captain walked through. Zoe and River pulled up the rear.

Jayne Cobb was not a man to smile unless it involved guns, women, gifts or fruit. But his face lit up at the sight of the three of them. Before he could even comprehend what he was doing he was hugging the girl.

“You have a ratio of 40 percent muscular tissue compared to...”

“River, shut up,” Jayne said as he let her out of the embrace.

“Been sniffing any of the Doc’s medicine, Jayne?” Mal asked, giving him a look.

“No, Mal, just...well glad to see you.”

“We don’t have any money with us, you understand?”

“Yeah, Mal I know, still glad to see ya.” Jayne smiled one last time. “Come on, we are all at the infirmary. What was that crash we heard?”

Zoe rolled her eyes. “The Captain ran out of juice for the shuttle just as we were approaching the beach.”

“Hey, I think I did a fine job of landing her on soft sand.”

“We landed upside down, sir,” Zoe said with a sigh.

“No one is Wash.” River spoke and the cargo bay grew quiet for a moment.

“Jayne, lead the way to the infirmary,” Mal instructed, stealing a glance at Zoe who couldn’t look him in the eye.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Simon tried to prevent her from biting down on her tongue as Kaylee stood behind him frantically mouthing something.

“What...Inara?” Mal asked running into the infirmary past Jayne.

“Captain!” Kaylee smiled brightly. “Zoe! River!”

Simon turned as he heard his sister’s name and couldn’t help but smile himself.

River though looked pale. “Too many thing at once. Overload. Inara must shut down.”

“What’s she saying? What happened?” Mal asked, the lines on his face suddenly visable.

“She began having a seizure...” Simon started to explain as Inara’s body twisted and turned.

“Make it stop,” Mal said.

“I can’t, it has to stop on it’s own, Captain.”

Inara’s body stopped moving. Her eyes opened wide but she wasn’t awake.

Kaylee’s hand went involuntarily to her mouth. “Oh no.”

“She’s not dead!” Mal screamed at the mechanic and then turned to the other members of the crew in the infirmary. “She isn’t!”

“Captain,” Simon said, closing Inara’s eyes. “Her heart has stopped beating and there isn’t any brain function.”

“Well then fix that!” Mal grabbed Simon’s shirt collar. “Don’t just stand there. Do something. Yan!”

River walked over to the body and put her hands on Inara’s face. “A body in motion can continue to stay in motion as long as force is still applied.”

“Newton?” Simon asked wanting to hug his sister and be grateful that she was alive but not having that chance to at the moment.

“Not Newton. Redmond. Redmond took Newton’s theory and expanded it.”

“Marcus Redmond?” Simon asked.

“Enough with the history lesson, do something about Inara.” Mal’s face was angry.

River swept her hands over Inara’s face. “Yes, Marcus. His final project. It was to keep people moving, keep people living. He never completed it. He died instead.”

“He was searching for eternal life?” Zoe asked beginning to comprehend.

“Yes. A body in motion stays in motion.” River pressed her small hands to the place Jayne’s much larger hands had pushed Inara’s chest. “She could live again.”

“What?” Mal asked letting go of Simon. “How? Tell me.”

River looked at him, her eyes wide. “You won’t like what I have to say.”
