“Whatever it is River, tell me,” Mal said, his voice trying to stay calm even though he wanted to shake the younger Tam.

“Redmond couldn’t complete his project but I saw the plans and he already constructed a way better than Simon’s paddles,” she looked at her brother, “to restart a heart.”

“Bi dan!” Simon said, his mind churning, “What did he discover that could give a heart enough of a shock?”

“Engine parts,” River said, her eyes focusing on Mal. “You must have Serenity give Inara the shock she needs to restart the pump that is her heart.”

“That’s it! Kaylee get to the engine room. Jayne, help me carry Inara.” Mal’s face brighten slightly.

“Captain, you don’t comprehend.” River shook her head. “In order for Inara to live Serenity must die.”

Kaylee spoke, “What she means is the baby won’t be able to run afterwards, we’ll have to get new parts.”

“So, we will get new parts, this is a person’s life we are talking about and right now, sir, we are wasting time,” Zoe said.

“Kaylee means to say that we might not find the parts for Serenity, she might die,” Mal put his hand on the wall of the infirmary. “You were a good ship,” he said. Then turning to Jayne, “Okay, let’s go.”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Simon didn’t tell the others that he had high doubts that River’s idea would work but he should have known better to doubt his little sister. Inara’s breathe returned and her heart started pumping. They were stranded on Laos for 14 days waiting for more help. Inara had still not awakened and the food supply was getting low. The crew’s remaining fiber of hope laid in River who promised that others were coming soon. Soon was just taking far too long.

It was on day 15 that two miracles occurred (though if you asked Mal he would have said only Book had believed in miracles). The first came early that day when Kaylee came running out of the infirmary.

“Captain!”

Mal and Jayne were sitting on grates staring at the empty cargo bay. Mal turned to the girl and stood.

“Captain, Inara’s eyes opened.” Kaylee’s smile was huge.

Mal took off, his heart thumping in his chest. He shouldn’t even like her never mind had fallen in love with her. But there was something about her that drew him to her. Not only did she understand him best but she had a little power over him that no one else did. At once his feelings for her made him elated and scared. He never wanted to be on the losing side of any battle and Inara could have broken his heart. It was easier, he felt, to pretend he didn’t care. But the more time they spent together, the facade began to crack.

He had lost Book, a man he admired and respected and Wash, another good friend just a few weeks before. He couldn’t lose Inara. It was too much, all at once. But then again the war never seemed to end and the causalities kept expanding.

“Mal,” her voice was soft as he walked into the infirmary, Jayne on his heals.

“Hey there, trying to get of paying for your next month’s rent,” He tried to grin but his eyes glistened with tears.

Simon stood with an arm around Kaylee. “Everything is functioning as it should.”

“It best be,” Mal said and wiped at his eyes.

“Are you crying?” Inara asked, laying very still.

“No, of course not. No real man ever cries. I got sawdust in my eyes, that’s all.”

“Ah, the old sawdust lie,” Inara reached out her hand, “come here.”

Mal moved closer, taking Inara’s hand.

“I’m glad to be still on this bucket surrounded by a band of petty thieves,” she said her fingers gently stroking his hand.

“The band of petty thieves is glad to have you around,” Mal replied.

“Really? I would think you would rejoice at not having to deal with me again.”

“Nope, no rejoicing. Did try to shoot the Doc and killed temporally Serenity for you...”

“You harmed your ship? For me?”

Mal shrugged. “Zoe insisted.”

“Oh, well, then I guess I’ll have to give a kiss to Zoe instead.”

“She’ll probably shoot you, if you try,” Mal responded and bent down closer to her. “But I did agree to it.”

“Well, then I guess you might deserve a kiss,” Inara said with a smile.

“Um, maybe we should get going,” Simon suggested moving Kaylee and Jayne out of the infirmary.

“Come on! It’s just getting good!” Jayne said, trying to catch one final glimpse as Kaylee and Simon pulled on his beefy right arm.

The second miracle occured an hour later when River and Zoe were out on the beach looking for more clams that had washed up on shore the day before.

“You miss him,” River said as a statement and not a question.

“Of course I miss Wash,” Zoe replied, “I loved him.”

“Kaylee wonders why you don’t cry for him.”

Zoe bent down and grabbed a clam from the sand. “I cry for Wash all the time.”

“But not in salty liquid exiting from behind the retina function.”

Zoe suppressed a grin. “Right, not in a tears form. We all mourn in our different ways.”

“Is it okay to mourn for one’s self?” River asked and when Zoe turned to look at her she resembled a young, unsure girl not the crazed fighter with a mountain of knowledge.

“You’re not dead, River.”

“A part of me is. The Academy took it took.”

“You may be different but you’re breathing, don’t forget that. I think Wash would have loved to be here with us if he could.”

River completed Zoe’s thought, “Even if it meant a part of him was gone?”

Zoe nodded. “Yes. You know the Captain lost a part of himself in the war. He isn’t the same man he was once.”

“But somewhere inside of him, he still has that part, he hasn’t lost it completely.”

Zoe smiled. “You have the answers, River, right inside of you.”

“I haven’t lost everything,” River said.

“No, you haven’t. And now you got us.”

River’s eyes looked up at the sky. “They’re here.”

“Who?”

She looked back at Zoe, “Help.”

The Otis brothers, friends of the crew of the Serenity, landed on the beach that day providing the crew with parts, medical supplies and a chance to rebuild once again.

Mal couldn’t believe how their luck had changed and when he remarked so to Warren Otis, Otis smiled, “Well, you sent us that wave. Just took us time to get here.”

“What wave? Our communication section is shut down.” Mal had frowned.

“I don’t know mate, all I can tell you was we got a distress signal from your ship.” Otis had merely shrugged his shoulders and walked away.

Mal turned to River who was making swirls behind him on the beach, “Was it you?”

“No silly,” she proclaimed looking up at the sky, “how could I have done that?”

Looking at her face he didn’t quite believe her. “No, how could you have. But you know what happens with bodies in motion don’t you?”

“Yes,” was all she replied as she danced on the sand on the planet Laos smiling brightly.
