So the bear and I watched TV last night, which is highly unusual for us! A friend lent us the first season of Battlestar Galatica, a show which I had never seen and knew nothing about. But last night, lacking anything better to do and in a mood to chill, we decided to start watching it

yay, I watch battlestar too! when I visited jersey after finishing grad school, enroute to nc, my older brother had just seen the miniseries. he had the same experience you did--he said he started watching thinking it was a regular movie, and then it just kept going, so he was up late one night, then had to eventually stop and finish it the next night. I enjoyed the miniseries and the first 2 seasons tremendously. I have had mixed feelings about the third season--they do a lot of "re-examing" established characters, which mostly transaltes into having characters we like do stupid things that seem out of character. I don't know that it sparked the same level of debate/discussion for me, but I do enjoy it.
