TV Time

Okay.  My TV is a brute of a thing, weighing in at probably more than I do.  ...so I'm not huge, but a hundred pounds for a tv is nuts!  It's also dated, needing an RF modulator to hook up anything with left-right audio and single visual (red, white, and yellow cables ( Read more... )

ours is a toshiba flat screen. excelent picture quality, the gaming delay is so small as to go un-noticed when we play smash, though it means we can't play duck hunt (sad). generally, my advice is to go with a brand you've heard of alot when going for an hdtv. Toshiba, Sony, etc. you know, the old tried and true brands. those are going to be your best bet.

The one complaint I do have about our Toshiba is that cable tv is not broadcast in widescreen. For TV watching, We fiddle with picture size until we find something that works. I prefere 'natural' which has black bands on the sides. Meg preferes 'wide' which stretches everyone into fat people. Then the Wii is adjusted for widescreen, so picture size goes to wide. Then movies, which end up getting adjusted per movie.

I'm not saying don't get widescreen, because it's nice when it works, but be careful that you get a widescreen TV that will let you adjust the picture size as needed.

oh, and so you don't get caught dumb: HDTV is a buzzword. It means 1024X768. It's the same resolution that computer monitors have been putting out since '95. It came into use when HD disks (same dimensions, different technology) and blueray came on the scene.

I recomend walking into best buy and playing good cop bad cop (a skill every couple should master) with a tv sales rep. There is a lot to learn from them, if you can keep from getting spun.

That's a good idea. At work, we sell a lot of Vizo (or is it Vizeo?) TVs, which are on the lower end of the price range. I'll bug Electronics, if I can find someone.

And Meg, after the trouble I've had with the Toshiba computer, I'll be damned if I buy a Toshiba TV.

Whoa, don't hate Toshiba just yet! Toshiba is a very big company, like Sony, that branches into a lot of different fields. It's so big, in fact, that each field is practically a different company. We have Toshiba copy machines here at work. Between the maintenance contract and the easy interface, I'd pick them over Cannon or Xerox. Toshiba also makes forklifts, TVs, Computers, and in some countries: cars. You can't judge the company for one product based on another. It's kinda apples and oranges ( ... )
