Camera geekery

So, I have entered in to the ever expensive hobby of cameras.  I've picked up a Nikon D40 starter kit that includes the 18-55mm lens, a camera bag and some memory cards (SD).  The expensive part is beyond the camera and lens, because of all the different and fun looking toys you can get for such equipment.  At a surface glance, I could get:

The speedlight is a good investment, as is the 55-200 and the UV filter. I've never found the need for a spare battery for the camera - only for my flash ( ... )

*prefers film...discusses photo-geekery with Kianir* Well, for one...if you have any kind of shake in your hands (like I do it seems) you'll NEED a tripod! I definitely agree with a shoe-mount tripod design. Getting one where you can angle the camera on the tripod is especially fun!

UV-filters are mostly just something to draw-in silly hipsters...useful in the right environments (like perhaps a..i dunno...desert), and just another add-on to increase glare the rest of the time.

The zooms...wait until you feel comfy with the lens you already have. No use making you learn how to do everything all at once right from the start.

How-to Books...I prefer to say "borrow/rent them" but I have no idea if you're able to do that, so *shrug*

And...I assume you already have some cute way to keep the lens clean, seeing as you wear some on your face all the time. So, you're already nicely on your way to sharing terrible photography with your friends and family! But you'll get better!

I keep a UV filter on my lenses just to protect the optics. And it's saved my butt a couple of times - It's a fair bit cheaper to replace a $30 filter then a $300 lens. It's also less wear on the optical coatings of said lens, becasue you're not cleaning it all the time!

About the only time it comes off is when I'm going to be doing photos where it will cause ghosting, or when I put my CPL or ND filters on ;)
