I think I've finally found *the* use for all of my perfume oils which I love, but frankly just don't wear on a daily basis. Definitely far behind many of the lovely ladies here in the usage of perfume oils in lotion, but I was timid (andl ooking for a good base.
Lotion base: Violette Market's lotion in Au Naturale
Oil: BPAL's Temple of Dreams
Firstly, I must say that I was very apprehensive about even touching the lotion to my skin when I smelled (smelt?) it. It's that sickly sweet, pastic-y scent, and frankly when it goes on the skin, I can't get it off fast enough. Really, it is some serious foulness, scent-wise. I know there's something that commonly smells like that, but I can't pinpoint it right now.
The texture is nice. Very silky--I do feel 'plush', and it doesn't vanish the way some lotions seem to (like B&BW) but the smell strengthens and gets so bad I can't stand it. I don't feel oily or greasy the way I do with Villainess's Ennui (which smells less pastic-y, but doesn't do great in the Houston weather...and makes me feel like a grease-ball).
ETA 9 hours later: I feel so soft and pettable~ I'm going to try this again today with a new scent and test if it's actually the lotion's durability or one of those 'you don't do much when you sleep, so nothing really changes' sort of things.
ETA: 17 hours later. Wow, I feel just about the same! Word of warning though: I'm beginning to wonder if the softness is superficial (skin-wise). You wash the area with a bit of water and the super sexy feeling goes away, so it may not be the type of lotion you use over and over and eventually your skin as a whole softens. However, not feeling dry =) So that's good. Besides, I obviously haven't bee using it over an exteneded period of time, so we'll see!
...
So you can understand why I was concerned about mixing precious oil into it--if the ichor smell is so strong, would it overpower the oil? I finally stirred up a tiny batch (less than 1/2 an ounce)...and it was beautiful <3
Temple of Dreams smells like my favorite massage oil, very herbal without smelling medicinal. Putting it into the lotion (it took a lot more than I expected!) and stirring it with a toothpick tempered the smell a bit, but also increased the throw of the scent. But the best part was that the wooden toothpick actually contributed to the scent. It added a very woodsy smell, which soothed some of the herbs into what fresh, wet woods smell like (like walking through a redwood forest). You get the resinous background with a firm wood in the front, and the natural herbs growing along the ground [if they'd grow in such an area].
Still feeling and smelling great after an hour...I hope all efforts wind up like this! My only miff (beside the initial stench of the lotion) is that so much oil was needed that the lotion lost some of its thickness, which I'm going to attempt to remedy by adding shea butter (if I'm going about this the wrong way, please stop me before I order the shea!)
And now to see if Temple of Dreams's effect will occurs ^_^
