She apparently took 7 months of lessons. I can't tell if she's really that clueless or if her instructors were that bad. But really, it's not that hard to master the basics.

Also: "There is something stirringly atavistic about the clang of blade against blade." If you're fencing, particularly foil, the blades shouldn't "clang."

Even if you're fencing sabre, there's not a lot of clanging.

I also don't understand how she took lessons for that long and didn't at least move from "now I lean to the left..." to some sort of muscle memory.

I don't know about foil as much (I don't think you use the same moves in with the same frequency), but for epee, they usually teach you parry 4, 6, and 8 early on, all of which are pretty easy maneuvers. I can still do them without much thought.
