I did the audiobook of Atlas Shrugged. I'm not a novel reader by any stretch of the imagination. Just technical manuals, text books, and hundreds of thousands of webpages. But of the few dozen I have made it through in my life. I can honestly say it was far and away the worst one.
I don't understand how so many of the people I went to school with are now so into her shit. People I grew up with some respect for seem to have fallen under some kind of 'stupid spell'. Flat Characters, a total lack of plot or character development, completely unrealistic scenarios, and insanely self interested completely contrived assholes populating every page(fuck proper punctuation).
I rather enjoyed "The Fountainhead" as I identified with the protagonist (in art school I once destroyed a piece of my own sculpture in class just to make a point), but "Atlas Shrugged" is beyond all hope and reason.
If you really want to know what the hubbub is about, "Atlas Shrugged" is the book to read, but afterwards you'll want to gouge your eyes out with a rusty spork.
I admire the essentials of her philosophical ramblings for the spirit of cutting out bullshit, but I can't help the fact that she was clearly a crazy bitch who knew nothing about how human beings actually operate.
It's sad how many fucking political Rand Roids natter on about how she totally justifies their strange notions. It's kind of like when Christians like Kant; just irritates the fuck out of me. (Or when Emo kids start reading Nietzsche, as if for even a sentence he ever spoke with the same tinsel-thin voice of their whiny raving.)
Perhaps the closest thing one gets to reading sane Randishness is Aristotle, and he predates her anyhow... though his Physics is about as off as Rand's politics.
Her work is so clearly a knee jerk reaction to Authoritarian Communism. But she has allowed her political pendulum to swing too an equally idiotic but opposite extreme.
