I haven't read the discussion elsewhere, but I read this post with interest.
The short version of this post -- conventions differ, people differ, and different conventions suit different people for all sorts of reasons -- makes perfect sense, and isn't a surprise. It's good to have different kinds of convention for all these reasons.
One think I'd mention, in response to just one point: lots of conventions of the interactive-panel type make donations to charities -- not least because, as non-profit organisations, we aren't intending to have any money left over. So for example Incon I gave its profits to the Dislexia Institute Bursary fund, Incon V gave them to Action on Breast Cancer, over the last forty years Novacon have given substantial sums to the RNIB to fund talking books for the blind, and so on. Individual Eastercons are separate sovreign entities and each is entitled to do as it wishes with its profits, but some of them have made charitable donations too.
On an entirely unrelated matter, is frandowdsofa on your friendslist? As

Disclaimer: I routinely go to Eastercons and other panel-based conventions, and I don't normally go to guest-oriented media conventions. I understand the appeal of each of them.
Thank you, I appreciate the reply and the information. I do agree with your short version and that's why I have difficulty with the amount of venom this matter seems to be causing.
Its nice to know any left overs do go to charity with some panel cons. :) I haven't heard however of LFCC's or other Media based cons doing so though.
I don't have frandowdsofa on my list. I will open up this post to non-friends, do feel free to point it out to her.
1. I haven't got into "panel type" cons and I don't want to spend tons of money to go to one if its only for room parties and non programme items. I'd prefer to do more smaller events for other things and actually go somewhere to be with my friends where I don't have to worry about hotel costs and can break it up over the year to make the most of it

I'm glad that you have thought about, and know what sort of events you like to go to.
Personally I want even *more* interaction than an eastercon is able to give and have found the media cons you like unappealing.
But if you enjoy them than that is fine too.
