Well, I'd have said it was the responsibility of the housemate to ask their guest to be quieter. Even asking them to SMS instead of knocking. Perhaps a conversation with housemate to set future expectations?
Yeah, it is most certainly good etiquette not to make more noise than is necessary. If they are a regular visitor, that may know your habits, that's certainly not on. If it's the first time they've visited any share house when someone in the house has been asleep, I get that it might just not occur to them, particularly if there's some urgency... But it's rudely inconsiderate not to think through how much noise you make when in close proximity to bedrooms.
