Yuuta wasn't sure what to think when he walked into the kitchen one morning to find his brother in a ruffly yellow apron, decorating a batch of freshly baked cookies.
"Ah, Yuuta," Syusuke smiled, "you're just in time. Have a seat, I'll be done in a moment." He gestured to one of the kitchen chairs with his tube of frosting.
"Aniki," Yuuta asked, carefully sitting in the chair, "why are you making cookies?"
"Hm?" Syusuke asked, making a tiny embellishment with the green frosting. "Oh, these? I was making an 'I forgive you' gift for your friend Mizuki. I was thinking that it was about time I accepted that you're not going to stop being friends with him just because I disapprove."
Yuuta gaped.
"Here, Yuuta, you can have the yellow ones," Syusuke said with a smile, and placed a small plate of cookies in front of his brother. Yuuta noticed with a sickly fascination that they were frosted the same color as Syusuke's canary-print apron.
He took a careful bite, then hummed with approval. These were pretty good. Mizuki would probably like them.
"I'm sorry I've been so stubborn about it all this time," Syusuke said apologetically, stacking the green frosted cookies into a purple tin. Mizuki would probably like that. "My attitude must have been very hard on you."
"It... was," Yuuta admitted, looking down.
"Sorry," Syusuke sighed, looking contrite as he crammed a cookie with extra extra frosting into the tin's remaining space before fitting on the lid.
Yuuta finished his cookies with a half smile. This felt nice. He had wanted his brother to get over the whole Mizuki-incident for a long time. It had been a while since he'd been able to spend time with his brother without feeling any kind of resentment toward him.
Syusuke placed the purple tin (complete with elaborate lavender bow) in front of Yuuta. "You wouldn't mind giving these to him, would you?"
"Of course not, aniki," Yuuta said, smiling back.
"Thanks, Yuuta," Syusuke said. He placed a ziploc bag stuffed with gray-frosted cookies on top of the tin and patted Yuuta's cheek. "These are for you. I made them the same color as your eyes."
---
"And that's what he said," Yuuta repeated, still half-disbelieving. "So, here." He handed the tin over to Mizuki with a smile.
"Nfu," Mizuki laughed, and took the tin graciously. "It's about time he accepted that I'm not going to leave you, Yuuta-kun. If I have my way, I'll never leave you." He winked at the younger boy in a way that made Yuuta a little bit uncomfortable. "Oh, and he even made it my favorite color."
Yuuta laughed nervously as Mizuki undid the bow. His manager kept making comments like that and Yuuta didn't know why.
"Green?" Mizuki said, frowning at the cookie with extra extra frosting that had been on top. "Hm. He should have made the cookies purple too."
"I don't think we had any purple frosting, Mizuki-san," Yuuta said placatingly. "At least he put them in a purple tin."
Mizuki smiled and took a bite of the cookie.
He promptly choked, sprayed the mouthful all over the floor, and fainted.
Dismayed, Yuuta took the cookie from Mizuki's twitching hand and scratched a sliver of green frosting off, tasting it carefully.
Then he dropped the cookie and ran for the bathroom to stick his mouth under the faucet.
He should have known better.
