Alan walked back on the set and everything seemed brighter and faster then it had been when he was injured just eleven days ago. His side still hurt, but he put on a brave face and closed his eyes before steeling himself and walking into the trailer for hair and makeup. He had the script in his hand and was reviewing the day’s scene for the third time and it still made him roll his eyes.

It was a fairly standard script, no Hemmingway or Shakespeare, but a popular topic with the telly viewing populace. Boy meets girl through some awkward situation, boy falls for girl, she acts aloof, boy hooks up with girl and then does something boyish and loses girl, only to repent and finally girl forgives boy and all is right with the world. Today was the girl-forgives-boy part, but Alan felt more like playing a boy-loses-girl part since he was feeling Robert’s loss quite deeply.

Today would require kissing and, knowing his co-star, it would require a lot of kissing, and Alan was not in a kissing mood. He really wanted to be left alone, but filming couldn’t be put off any longer. Today he would definitely be putting his acting skills to the test, he thought as the stylist worked a product into his hair and separated a few curls to lay across his forehead. Alan took one last look at his watch before he took it off his wrist and slowly dressed in the clothing of an office worker. As he wrapped the tie around his neck for the final touch, he was finally able to smile, remembering how much Robert had seemed to disdain neckwear, even though it was a daily occurrence for his own character.

Heading out to the set, he continued to think about Robert. The man seemed to permeate his thoughts more and more. They had talked briefly before he had headed out the door and it had just seemed to whet Alan’s appetite. Alan smiled and greeted everyone, getting well wishes and happy ‘welcome backs.’ He made sure to be careful to return each handshake and return each greeting, for he was already in character, playing the role of himself.

Alan studied the scene as the crew set it up, then watched as they set up the lights, mentally reviewing the memorized script. He closed his eyes, imagining that it was him and Robert acting out their relationship. They had certainty made it through the awkward boy-meets-boy situation, and boy-falls-for-boy. They had also a brief stay in boy-acts-aloof, then dove right into boy-hooks-up-with-boy. Alan hoped they would defy convention and skip the boy-acting-dumb part. Chuckling softly as he stood in his mark, he waited for the girl to join the shot and for the scene to play out how ever many times it took to get it right and achieve all the angles. No, Alan thought as he waited for his cue, this is not what he wanted for him and Robert. Their relationship was like this special gift, and Alan was not ready to share it with the world. He did not want to be some spokesman, or some symbol. He just wanted to live his life for him and Robert, and the time they would be able to carve off to be together.

Alan shook his head and ran through the memorized lines once more. Then wondered how many times his co-star was going to screw it up. Alan held his breath, letting it out slowly as she giggled and they prepared to kiss. He looked at her lips, full and perfectly glossed, and thought of a much different pair. Thinner and minus the gloss, lacking a nervous quiver, and parted slightly. Waiting for their lips to meet and touch, he felt a twinge in the core of his body. Shaking it off he smiled shyly and waited for the call to action.

“Action!”

He stepped forward and muttered some inane line and then gently cupped his hand around the back of her neck and pulled her forward to him, laying his lips to hers and felt her part her mouth. Normally he would have taken advantage and ridden the moment out, but that was a lifetime ago. He put the passion required of him into it and he ravaged her mouth, his lips pursed together.

“Cut.”

Back to their own corners yet again. Alan played with the placket of his shirt, fiddling. He was nervous. The ten days ago that Robert had been with him now seemed like a very long, but pleasant, dream. Feeling another person’s lips against his own had only heightened the fact that he couldn’t go home to Robert, lose himself in a passionate kiss and forget this whole day, this whole shoot, had ever happened.

They were called back to their places and Alan had a hard time keeping his feet from dragging. When the director called out action, he closed his eyes, not wanting to see the ditzy brunette’s lips approach, hoping he looked excited with anticipation rather than bored. He tried to put himself in a happy place not involving having a woman wrapped around him who was trying to discretely slip him some tongue. This was going to be a very long day.
