Doubts Alan dove for the phone when it rang. Really, it could be no other person. “Hey, Love,” he greeted cheerfully.
“Lucky it was me and not the old lady down the street!” Robert sounded out of breath.
“Getting ready to leave?”
“Yeah. Last minute rush to make sure I have everything. Wish you were going to be there when I get in.”
“You’ll be so busy with your play that you won’t have the time to miss me.”
“Oh, you know that isn’t true! Three weeks! I think I may go crazy!”
Alan smiled, hearing the frustration in Robert’s voice. He sat down on the sofa. “You’ll do fine. Don’t forget that I might be going just a little crazy as well knowing that you are in the same country and I can’t zip over to snog you hello.”
“It would be nice if you did, but I guess that is selfish.”
“If I had time I would in a heart’s beat, but it looks like this might be a pretty tight shooting schedule. We do get three weeks once I am done, so that has to count for something.”
“Yes, you are right. Do you need me to do anything?”
“Why yes, Mr. Leonard, talk dirty to me.” Alan laughed when he heard Robert stutter. “No, you don’t need to do anything. The house is all locked up and ready for you.”
“What did you do? Leave me a surprise?”
“Well, maybe you will just need to see when you arrive. You are all set with the tube? Or are you taking a cab?”
“I think I will brave the tube; get the real experience and all.”
“I know a real experience I would like to give you.”
“Yes, Mr. Davies? Care to elaborate?”
“Well Robert, I could, but I think you have a plane to catch, and I would hate to make you miss it while I tell you all the things I would like to do to you.”
“Taking the easy way out? You know I am going to make you talk when I see you next.”
“I look forward to your attempts.”
“I’ll phone you as soon as I get in,” Robert promised.
“I don’t think I ever said, but you had left your book here.”
“Ah, so you did find it. Like it?”
“What makes you think that I read it?”
Robert snorted.
“Fine. Yeah, I liked it.”
“Only liked?”
“I enjoyed it tremendously, splendidly. Happy?”
Robert laughed. “You sound like Stephen.”
“Just finished QI, I shall sound like him for a spell.”
“I miss you, I wish…”
“Robert, we will be in the same time zone, that is a start. Before you know it, I will be wrapped around you, and I might not let you go.”
“I hope you don’t…”
“Robert, I miss you and you should go catch your plane now. Fly safe, and call when you get home.”
“I will. I think I land around noon, so I will probably call about two after I settle. Is that okay?”
“Yes, and if I don’t pick up, leave me a message and I will call right back.”
“Shooting today?”
“Yeah,” Alan looked at his watch. “Technically in 5 hours.”
They chuckled, then lapsed into silence.
“Hate to,” Robert finally said, “but I need to leave now so I don’t miss my flight.”
“Love?”
“Yeah?”
Alan lost his nerve. “See you soon, fly save.”
“Good bye Alan, I will see you soon.”
“Cheers.”
