Robert came out of the bedroom, clad in shorts and Tee, stretching his arms up over his head. "Do you want to join me in a run today?"

"How about a walk up the hill instead? Something I want to show you."

Robert looked at Alan and rolled his eyes, wondering what he was trying to distract him with. "You can't show me here?" He made an attempt at batting his eyes.

Alan shook his head with a laugh, already going out the door. He paused outside and waited for Robert to catch up with him.

It was a bright afternoon and they had already had a light lunch, fresh cheese and fruit, and both were looking forward to some fresh air and some exercise. Robert jogged next to Alan's stroll, still wanting his run, until he was glared at and he took up the same pace. "Where are we going?"

Alan sheilded his eyes and pointed up the hill to what looked like a small cave. "Up there, think you can handle the strain?" he asked sarcastically.

Robert slowed and put his hands on his knees, waiting for Alan to turn, then waved him to keep going. "I just, need a, bit of a breather. You go on up, without me," he panted.

Alan laughed and slapped Robert on the ass to get him moving again.

Their villa was settled in the hillside and afforded them beautiful views of the beach below, but this was farm country. Scattered fields of cows and small rows of vegatables haphazardly settled out in back, no other homes directly visable.

The ground was uneven, but their trail was well-worn over decades, or perhaps, Robert mused, centuries of feet that had walked there before. "I was watching this documentary a few weeks back..." he started.

"Do you ever watch anything fun?"

"It was fun, just let me finish," Robert held up a hand. "40,000 miles of off-road public rights of way - footpaths, bridleways and byways that the public has a right to use - are recorded on official maps in England and Wales." **

"Interesting." Alan thought the best part was watching Robert's lips, trying to catch the small glimpse of tongue.

"I was thinking, maybe we should take a weekend and go walking? It could be fun."

"I can think of more exciting ways to spend a weekend."

"Doing what?"

"Kiss me."

"What?"

Alan laughed. "Kiss me."

"Not out here."

"Why not? No one is here, just me and the cows." Alan nodded, gesturing to a field behind Robert where several cows were watching.

Robert turned to look at the nearest one. "Look at how that cow is eyeing us. I think she likes you."

"But I only have moos for you."

Robert groaned.

Alan walked up to the cow that was standing close to the fence, her friends standing back. As he walked up she seemed to move closer. "Hello cow. My boyfriend here thinks that you will be jealous if I kiss him."

"Alan, stop it."

"Shhhh I am talking to the cow. Let's call her...Bessie." Alan reached out and touched the cow’s ear. It twitched and she continued to chew her cud, just watching back and forth between Alan and Robert.

"I am not sure she likes that name," Robert said uncertainly.

"What do you think her name is?"

"Only with you," he mumbled. "Okay, how about Mathilde, Annabelle, Nancy?"

The cow in question mooed.

"I don't think she likes your choice of names. We should just stick with Bessie. She seems to like that."

The cow returned to chewing her cud.

"Kiss me?" Alan asked again.

"Bessie would be jealous and might go on a rampage."

"I don't think she would do that. She says she is a lover not a fighter, but her sister...Let's just say Bessie's sister has some unresolved issues."

"She's a cow." Robert thought it necessary to point that out.

"A sensitive cow, apparently, since you are worried about her reaction."

"You can be exasperating." Robert laughed and, with one last look at Bessie, he pulled Alan into a quick passionate kiss, nipping at Alan's lips as he pulled away.

"And you were worried about a cow watching us?"

"Alright, alright. I was overreacting."

"How can we hike through England if we don't stop every couple of miles to frolic in the meadows?"

"More like every couple of feet."

Alan smiled and looped his pinky to Robert's as they walked away from the cow. He paused to turn back towards the pasture. "Bye Bessie, thanks for the help."

Scaling the small hill, Robert thought his lungs would explode. It should not be this difficult. Robert made a mental note to himself to start exercising more than the odd run here and there. He looked over at Alan and felt a little better; the flushed skin and sharp breaths mirrored his own. They finally reached the crest and they stopped breathing for a whole new reason: It was a beautiful vista. The valley led down to the ocean and you could see it gleaming in the distance as the sun seemed to sink into it.

Alan led Robert back a few paces, just inside the mouth of a shallow cave, the sun still able to reach them. “Sit?”

Robert looked over smiling at Alan. “Good idea, you must be tired.” He was still trying to catch his breath.

“Sounds like you need to work on your endurance.”

“Glass houses?”

Alan looked at Robert for a few minutes, both breathing hard, before he finally relented and sat down first, waiting for Robert to join him.

Sitting side by side they both faced out to the ocean. “It’s beautiful up here. So quiet.”

Alan smiled, turning his head to look at Robert, shielding his eyes from the bright sun. “I came up here about five years ago. It has been one of me favorite places on earth since."

Robert leaned his head on Alan’s shoulder and closed his eyes to the glare, just enjoying the warmth of the sun and the warmth of Alan’s body so close to his.

Alan kissed the top of Robert’s head and started to move his hand in an attempt to wrap an arm across his companion, but he was stopped by two hands enclosing his one and holding tight. He smiled and returned the squeeze, closing his eyes and pressing his nose to the top of Robert’s resting head. He loved the way he smelled.

"It's a nice perspective, and see our place," Alan said after a few minutes and pointed to a speck down the hill. "Complete privacy, nothing to worry about."

"I'm still not getting naked in the pool with you."

"You're not very much fun," Alan pouted.

"One of us has to be the adult."

"I'm glad that's not me." Alan pulled a silly face and laid back on the soft terrain.

"So am I." Robert laughed and laid down next to Alan, hips resting against each other and backs of hands pressed together. They both looked skyward.

"Tired?" Alan asked, turning his head to look at Robert in profile.

"No, not really. I think I am actually relaxed for the first time in five years."

"Not, very healthy. Has work been that busy?"

"Busy worrying about where to work, especially before House, then the shoots, now every season can be my last. What to do when it is all over and how much I have...I fret well," he added with a small laugh, starting to get worked up.

"You don't have to worry now."

"Alan, that's nice, but..."

"Honestly, Robert. Enjoy the life you have. The life we have. There's no sense is getting worked up over something you..."

"I just don't want to make a mis..."

"You won't. Robert have you not learned anything from the characters you have portrayed?"

"I've never been a carpe diem kinda guy."

"Maybe that is what's missing."

"I doubt it. I just have never trusted anything will last. Too good to be true and all that." He let go of Alan's hand to pull up blades of grass. "As good as things get, what if there is something better? Why settle when that something better can be around the corner?"

"So, you are settling?"

"Alan you are taking me out of context. I love you, I do, but will we still feel the same way in five years?"

"Well, how bout I get back to you in five years? In the mean time, there are lots of kisses I can steal from you, and lots of adventures we can have, and so much life to live. There's no sense in putting it all on hold for something we have no idea about."

"I have just never felt that certain, always felt a step behind."

"I always want you next to me, and I thought you were."

"Really?" His voice was soft, whisper-like.

"Robert, don't be silly." Alan turned his head. Robert was staring up at the sky, his face was no longer relaxed, but creased with tension. Alan rubbed the back of his hand against Robert's to reassure him.

"Alan, somedays I have no idea if I am doing any of this right."

"What, love?"

"This. Am I a good bo...lov...partner?" Robert stuttered, unable to quite say the words. "Do I give you enough of me?"

"Robert, how can you think that?" Alan looked back up at the sky, the sun was setting, the air was cooling, and Alan wanted to lay there all night, next to the most important person in his life at one of his favorite spots in the world. "As long as you give me what you can and are honest with me, I really can't ask for more. I just wish you knew that."

"I think I do in my heart, but I wish things were not so fragile."

"Things are stronger than you know. If they weren't then, we wouldn't be here. All that is credit to you and your strength, can't you see?"

Robert turned his head to look at Alan. "I'm trying."

They lapsed into a silence for a little bit, both at a loss for words.

The filtered sun started to relax them, making them sleepy. Alan needed something to talk about to stay awake, and wanted to just listen to Robert's voice softly bounce off the cave walls. "So, how is Wilson?"

"Coma."

"How long?"

"Until they find a new story line for him."

"Really?"

"No," Robert laughed. "Probably through the first four episodes. I think he will be in a coma for the 5th, and they will do a very special episode where Wilson regains the will to live, or something like that, and he wakes up."

"Robert," Alan scolded.

"Hey, I wouldn't put it past them. When I left, Doris and Lawarence warned me that I'd better rest up, the coma won't last long. So I really have no idea what they are thinking."

"It's a job that you kinda enjoy, at least."

"You're right, I do like it overall. But TV moves so slowly, no matter how hard we try to go faster."

"Sounds like you would prefer a Brit show."

"It is tempting after hearing Hugh talk."

"But you are stuck on American TV."

"In a coma," Robert nodded. "And you? Anything steady?"

"No, I've worked off and on until November. But then I really have not looked at anything. Of course QI starts up again next year."

"QI's good."

"Yeah, but sometimes playing Stephen's puppy gets old. I really want a project that I can grow into, like I was with Jonathan Creek, but I just haven't heard anything that might be coming that is interesting."

"You'll find something, or you can just come out to LA and keep me company."

Alan brushed his hand against the back of Robert's. "I might take you up on that."

"That would be nice." Robert returned the gentle touch.

"Anything else on your radar?" Alan asked after a few minutes of comfortable silence.

"A few books on tape. Figure while in a coma, I can keep busy."

"That works. Do you read the books ahead?"

"No. Generally I just read the chapters I am working on that day. I like to keep it a little fresh."

"No more telly?"

"Not for a long time. If it was the right project, I would consider it, but I really miss the stage. I miss an audience's reaction, the adrenalin."

"So, back to Broadway?"

Robert stopped before he started to reply. He had almost invited himself to London for a year or two, just to check out the theater scene, or that's what he told himself. "Yes, I do miss New York. It will be nice to go back."

"I guess I will look forward to it as well, want me to meet you there? Or fly to LA?"

"For..." Robert thought for a second and then remembered Thanksgiving. "Of course, that's right, a Leonard Thanksgiving. Think you are ready for that?"

"Will you sit next to me?"

"Of course."

"Then I will be fine."

"Alan?"

Alan bit his lip and smiled. "Yes love?"

"Thanks." Robert lifted his hand and set it on top of Alan's, who turned his hand palm up, letting Robert's hand settle onto his, fingers threading themselves.

Alan smiled wider, even though he knew Robert was not looking at him.

"I can feel you smiling."

"Can't stop."

"Never want you to."

"So, LA or New York?"

"LA, if you can."

"Early November?"

"I guess that will have to work." Robert sighed, already thinking about the long absence.

"The sun is almost set," Alan said softly with a nudge.

"Getting hungry?"

"Yeah, and could use a shower."

"Really?"

"Yes, want to take advantage of the well-proportioned showers again?"

"I might be up for that. Let's go."

"I really am pretty comfortable, can you give me an incentive?"

Alan sat up, dropping Robert's hand. "I think that can be arranged." He leaned over and pressed his lips to Robert's, surprising him. Alan braced himself over Robert and shivered when he felt Robert bring his hands up and run them down his back. He sighed deeply and felt Robert break into a smile. He sat back on his heels, enjoying the light grip Robert had on his waist.

"Alright, let's go."

Alan stood up and held out a hand. Robert held on and let Alan pull him up, he landed against Alan in an embrace.

“Alan?”

“Yes, Robert.”

“I love you.”

Alan rubbed his cheek against the top of Robert’s head and closed his eyes, freezing this moment, wanting to always remember it. “I love you, too.”

No other words were necessary, no other words exchanged. The sun set and the air cooled and they stood side by side, not ready to give up the warmth they found next to each other.

"Here we go."

"It is beautiful up here, what a great view."

Alan looked at Robert, shining smile on his face. "Yes, it is."

Robert shoved Alan's shoulder and laughed, turning to walk away. "Shower, dinner, bed?"

"I thought maybe we could watch the video I brought down for our trip."

"Alan..." Robert warned.

"Honestly, you will like it."

"As long as there is no cheesy music..."

Alan looked down at the ground and took a step away from Robert.

"Alan...."

"There might be some cheesy music and contrived plots, but honestly. Trust me."

"Famous last words?"

"Robert?"

"Yes?"

"Remember, I love you."

"Last one home...." Robert took off running towards the villa.

"Stands in back of the shower?" Alan took off after him.
