Rob hung up and was instantly greeted by his wife, arms crossed over her chest and eyes narrowed.

"I can't believe you invited that...that man to Thanksgiving."

"'That man' happens to be Bobby's boyfriend," Rob pointed out, testing the out the word.

Joy flinched. "H-how can you just accept that your son is a homosexual?" She lowered her voice on the last word, as if afraid the neighbors were listening in against the wall with plastic cups pressed to the wood.

"Really, dear. It isn't our call. Bob, and his significant other, is welcome here anytime." His look softened when he saw his wife's frustration. "Come here, have a seat."

Joy warily sat down.

"Do you remember the day our Robert was born?"

Hesitantly she nodded, unsure of where the conversation was going and not thinking that she would like the direction.

"He was a tiny little thing," Rob started, staring at some point over his wife's shoulder, lost in the memory of all those years ago. "He was quiet, thoughtful, didn't fuss like his brother. The labor was long and hard; I remember pacing the length of the waiting room until a nurse finally came out and told me that I could come and see my son. I was overjoyed to have a new life to take care of and to raise. You were weak still, but when I crept into the room, you had him in your arms, and you were glowing. I sat down next to you and held your hand as we looked down on the newest member of our family. I remember you saying how blessed we were. How you wished that he could grow up to be successful and happy, and that was all that mattered. Well, today he is both of those things, and they should still be all that matters." He finally looked at his wife, her eyes watery with tears as she took in his words.

"He has always been a good son," Rob continued. "He has been an important part of this family, a real joy. Even when he started to act and we were concerned that he would fail, he found a way to make it work, to be happy. Sweetheart, I love you and I love our children. We have raised a good boy who became an extraordinary man. We are lucky and need to count every blessing that we have."

Joy was looking down fidgeting with a napkin. Slowly she nodded.

"I want to meet him."

Now she looked up.

"Thanksgiving. I told our son that he would be welcome to bring Alan. Is he? Welcome?"

"How am I going to face that man after what he's done?"

"It takes two people to start a relationship." He reached out and clasped Joy's hand, brushing his thumb against the back of her knuckles. "He needs us to be supportive right now. Even if we don't agree."

Joy met her husband's eyes and was able to summon up a watery smile. "I can try." It sounded more like a question than a statement.

Rob nodded, then gave her hand a squeeze and let go, standing. "I said I would call him back. Are you sure you will be alright? No hysterics?"

"I love my son, I just wish..." her voice trailed off as she stood and gathered then plates from a dinner she was no longer hungry for. She stood at the sink, looking out the window while her husband made his phone call. She could hear his voice faintly, but she ignored the words. Is it possible to hate someone you have never met? She still was not sure how she could greet the man who had corrupted her son. She knew for her husband she would try her very best, but success was not guaranteed.
