Time to Let Go
For once, Robert arrived home from work with a smile--no, a grin--on his face. He glanced at the clock, calculating Alan's time. It would be late for Alan, but he was too excited to really care. He knew that Alan would enjoy the news as much as he had. He snatched up his phone, dialed, then listened to the ringing for a few moments before Alan's groggy voice answered.
"'Lo?"
"Alan, I know it's late--"
"Nearly two," Alan mumbled, yawning loudly.
"--But someone is going to die!"
"What?" Alan sounded more alert. "Robert, are you--?"
"No, I'm fine. It's not me, well, yes, but..." He stuttered himself to a stop. "It's Wilson."
"Wilson's going to die..." Alan spoke slowly, thoughtfully, as if trying to make sense of a foreign language. "Oh! That's wonderful news! Right? Good news?"
"Best I have had in awhile."
"What brought this on?"
"I think the writers have been planning on it for awhile. They were just looking for a good point in the storyline to bring it up."
"Wow, so what are the plans?"
"Well, things are still being discussed. Not at the script writing stage yet. This is a storyline that needs to be handled carefully. But Wilson will definitely be no more by the end of the season. I, I can't believe it."
"I'm happy for you, love. You will finally be a free man."
"Yeah. I think I am still in shock. Look, I'm sorry to wake you, but I just had to tell someone. Not even Hugh or Lisa have been told."
"No apologies. This was worth losing a little sleep over."
"Looking forward to seeing you."
"Me, too. Just a few more days and I will be on me way."
"Oh, and Alan?"
"Hmm?"
"I really don't think that I was supposed to tell anyone."
"Mum's the word, love."
"Thanks. Have a good rest of your night. Love you."
"Love you, too. Bye."
"Goodbye." Robert clicked off the phone, letting it drop to the couch, a little dazed as the news continued to hit home. It felt like a giant weight, or at least one of them, had been lifted off his shoulders. After the season wrapped, if Wilson even made it that far, there would be absolutely nothing tying him to LA. Or anywhere, really. The smile slipped from his face. Was this going to be the time to take things to the next level with Alan? What exactly was the next step? And would he be ready?
