*Ring, ring*

“Hello?”

“Robert, you bloody bastard!”

Robert almost choked on his morning coffee, only his second sip, and wondered what he had done to ruffle Alan’s feathers. “Excuse me?”

“You died on me!”

“Wha--Oh the episode!” It finally dawned on him. “I didn’t have a choice. I was hit by a drunk driver.”

“Excuses, excuses.”

“Are you okay?” Robert had heard the slight catch in Alan’s voice.

“Just shook me up a little.”

“So you called to swear at me?” Robert tried to joke, but just silence answered him. “Alan, I’m sorry.”

A shaky sigh. “Shouldn’t have called right after.”

“You don’t need to apologize.”

“I just couldn’t get the thought out of me head that ‘what if this was real?’ I don’t know what I would do if...” he trailed off, not wanting to finish his sentence.

Robert felt his chest tighten. He wanted nothing more than to be able to offer more than just words to Alan. He wanted to wrap Alan in his arms and whisper promises to stay away off the road for the rest of his life.

“Guess my acting was good?”

This time Alan responded with a small laugh. “Award-winning performance.”

“Uugh,” Robert groaned, “no awards.”

“But you were brilliant!”

“You always say that.”

“More brilliant, then.”

“Stop it, you’re making me blush,” Robert deadpanned, taking a noisy sip of his coffee.

“Have you even watched the episode?”

“Nope.”

Alan tsked.

“Not my fault that I don’t like staring at myself as much as you do.”

Now Alan laughed and Robert grinned, pleased to get Alan out of his mood.

"Wait. How did you get to see the episode? It only aired here last night."

"I have ways," Alan answered cryptically.

Robert closed his eyes, picturing Alan with a large smile on his face, a smile that he could clearly hear over the phone.

"So, now comes the press?"

"Yes. They e-mailed me the week's schedule, and it's crazy. Every day a few interviews. I am going to be so happy to be done with this."

"Then you are all mine, and you’re not driving."

"You drive on the wrong side of the road over there, so you don't have to worry."

"And I have ways to keep you in the flat, nice and safe."

"That sounds good." Robert let his mind drift as he remembered the smell of Alan's hair in the morning and Alan's warm body pressed against his. He let out a small sigh, then a curse as he heard his call waiting beep in his ear. "And here it starts," he grumbled into the phone.

"Gotta go, love?"

"Yes, the calls are starting. I'll call you later?"

"I’ll look forward to it. Stay safe and avoid too much driving, please."

"Anything for you. I love you."

"Talk later, love you, too."

Robert took a deep breath and glanced at the calendar he had laid out on the coffee table the night previous. The phone beeped again and he reluctantly answered. "Hello? Yes this is Robert." He leaned back on the couch, dragging his eyes away from the calendar and toward the ceiling. He exchanged pleasantries with the interviewer and the conversation began. The end of the interview could not come soon enough and he looked forward to another cup of coffee, a hot shower, and to begin counting down the weeks, days, and minutes until he would get to see Alan again. Not soon enough.
