Some Things Never Change

"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday, dear Robert, happy birthday to you!"

Robert chuckled into the phone. "Hello, Alan, and thanks."

"Hope I'm the first?"

"Yes, it just turned midnight...."

"Mission accomplished. Any plans when you get up?"

"No, not really. I am getting estimates on shipping my stuff back to New York."

Alan hid his slight disappointment that Robert was not planning on moving to London. “How does that feel?"

"Good. It will be nice to move on, get back home. Just when I'm getting used to the weather here."

"Sun, sun, and more sun? When are you moving back?"

"I'll be done here with interviews and things in about 6 weeks, then I will meet my stuff in New York. And once it has been delivered, I will be flying out to see you, of course. It still seems like forever. No chance to fly out here for a week or so?"

"QI, so no...but we can be creative."

"Really, now." Robert quickly changed the topic. "How's Tracy?"

Alan was a little disappointed that he didn’t take the bait, but decided to humor Robert's question. "Tracy is great, she wanted me to wish you a happy birthday and says she is looking forward to introducing you to the new man in her life."

"That's great!! I miss her, too. Tell me about the new guy. She didn't mention him in her last e-mail."

"Let's see...He is temperamental. And picky. He has no job and spends the day laying about and eating expensive food. But she loves him."

"Alan... seriously?"

"She adopted a new cat and the way she runs her mouth about it, I am worried about her turning into an old spinster. She really needs a boyfriend."

"Alan...you better not..." Robert scolded around his chuckles.

"With fixing her up, all attempts have been thwarted. It's reaching a crisis level. She is talking about a second cat and cardigans already."

Robert laughed. He knew Alan was putting on a little show to get them both to forget about the distance between them, but all it made Robert want to do was reach out and caress Alan's face and thread his hand through his hair and kiss him. Some days it ached more then others. "Thankfully I will be there soon to distract you from meddling in your sister's life."

"A welcome distraction, but now QI will have to do. How long do I get you for this time?"

"Until I get work. Until then your unemployed boyfriend will just lounge on your sofa while you go out and earn us some money." Robert used a southern accent to tease Alan with.

Alan laughed out loud, he loved Robert most when he was a little playful and midnight seemed like the best time to get him when he was a little less guarded "Now, you are just being a cock tease."

"Cock tease?"

"The southern accent. Damn it's sexy. We might need to add it to..."

"No, Alan...that’s ..." Robert stuttered.

"I love you."

"Love you too, Alan." Robert yawned into the receiver.

"Is the birthday boy tired?"

"Tired from doing nothing, spent most of the day reading. The press starts up again next week. So until then, I am on standby. I miss the set a bit, but not enough to hang out there and watch Hugh torture himself hour by hour."

"More of the same then?"

"Yeah. I'll probably go book shopping and dinner with Lisa and Hugh. Lisa insisted."

"Have specific books in mind?"

"No, been looking at contemporary fiction as of late. I'll just see what grabs me."

Alan closed his eyes and saw Robert carefully walking through the stacks, slowing reading the back of each book, glasses pushed up on his face and hair pushed in every direction, his face serious as he weighed the pros and cons before picking up the next book. It was really the little things he missed most, just the quiet intimate normal moments. "Sounds like a nice way to wind down. Dinner sounds great, too. Have an extra pudding for me. "

"I'll call you later, post movers and pre book store, just to ..."

"I'll look forward that, but enjoy your birthday."

Have a great day, Alan, and we will talk soon."

"Sleep well, love." Alan hung up the phone and closed his eyes. He needed to be at the studio in a couple of hours. Hearing Robert's voice in his head, he traced his finger down his torso and under the sheets. He still had time.
