Afternoon Delight

Robert picked up the phone, his attention focused on the TV. "Hello?"

"Hello, love, you sound distracted."

"Sorry, yeah. I'm watching a good movie, it has subtitles, so...sec, let me pause it."

Alan could head Robert fumbling with the remote.

"Hello Alan, how are you?"

"Welcome back, love," Alan laughed. "Good movie?"

"Yeah, it's almost over. Italian Film. Bread and Tulips."

"Not an action film then?"

"Hardly. It is a searing drama about a woman whose family forgets about her on vacation, so she ditches them and takes her own vacation, and ends up...well I'm not sure yet."

"Where did you find this?"

"Lisa. She's in an Italian phase, so the cast is getting reviews and homework. It has been fun. I'll miss her."

"Homework?"

"She has a series of movies that she thinks will be good for us and, well, this is my second movie that apparently is required viewing. I'm not sure why yet."

"What was the first?

"Cinema Paradiso."

"What was your homework?"

"Oh, it wasn't hard. Lunch with Lisa to discuss. Jen and Olivia were there too."

"I feel so uneducated now..." Alan laughed.

"It was a little cerebral for me too, but it was interesting to get other perspectives. I'm going to miss the people, but not the 16 hour days."

"I miss you..."

Robert closed his eyes and replaced the kissing scenes at the end of Cinema Paradiso with him and Alan. For a second he wondered what their happy ending would be.

"Was it a happy movie?"

"Ah, but that is for you to decide. Watch it and let me know."

"So, Lisa's Italian film school goes international then?"

"Something like that. It's a good movie and she promised to send me homework movies while I am in London, so be prepared."

"She is going to culture both of us one way or another."

"Yeah. I’ve always read plays and novels, but movies have...well I have never been a huge movie person, but Lisa is changing that a bit. The non commercial films, some of them are quite good. But I would rather see them then act in them, I know that much."

"Looking forward to being back on stage?"

"Like you don't know, I just want to feel that rush of adrenaline. I want the roar of the crowd, the fear of forgetting my lines. Just knowing that for two hours, I have the audience's attention free of commercials or product placement."

"Have anything brewing?" Alan secretly wanted the answer to be no so that Robert would be able to spend more time with him in London.

"No as of yet, but then I did specifically tell my agent that I needed six weeks off once House is over. The clock starts ticking when the plane takes off to you."

It would be nice if it never started ticking, Alan thought. "And I plan to make the most of our time," he said instead.

"And we will watch all the movies that Lisa assigns us?" Robert laughed.

"Whatever you want, Robert. I will be at your command."

"Really? Anything?"

Now Robert was feeling frisky. "I would love to explore this further," Alan said with regret, "but I have a QI taping in an hour."

"Spoil sport."

"Timing is everything, my love. We can pick up this conversation when I get back from taping."

"Work, work, work," Robert said with an overly dramatic sigh, "I'll go back to my movie then."

"Tell me how it turns out..."

"No, you watch it and then we can talk about it."

"Alright, miss you."

"Thanks for the call. Talk later today."

"Bye." Alan regretfully hung up the phone as he reached the door. He grabbed his coat and raced down to the waiting cab.
