One Foot in Front of the Other

Stephen entered the room sometime later. The sight of Robert, head resting up against Alan’s arm, his fingers lightly entwined with Alan’s and fast asleep, made him smile. He hated to wake him, really he did, but the position just had to be murder on his back. “Robert,” Stephen called out softly, watching Robert tense up when the realization of where he was came crashing back to him.

Robert’s eyes focussed on Alan’s hand, loosely gripped in his own. A small cough behind him made him realize why he had woken up. He leaned back in his chair with a grimace. His back was already tightening up, and he let go of Alan's hand to stretch his arms above his head and heard a loud pop in his back. Settling back in the chair, he closed his eyes sad to notice that this was not a dream. When he cracked open his eyes, a cup of coffee was placed in front of is face and he squinted trying to find focus on the offered object. He took the cup and nodded a thanks to Stephen, then returned his attention back to Alan. He had a little more color in his face, but was still resting. A heavy hand on his shoulder made him realize that he needed some real rest, in a real bed. He leaned back in his chair and looked up at Stephen. "You're right, we should go soon."

As Robert took a sip from his hot coffee, not ready to leave Alan yet, Stephen dangled a wrapped sandwich in front of his face. With a minute shake of his head, Robert took the sandwich, but didn’t make a move to unwrap it, let alone eat it. He toyed with it, turning it over and over in his hands, until he felt a touch of reassurance on his shoulder.

“I could toddle on down to the gift shop if you would rather have a plaything than a sandwich. Less messy, I think.”

Robert breathed a small laugh and stopped fidgeting. He tilted his head to the left, bumping Stephen’s arm lightly, then set about unwrapping the sandwich and took a bite. It was bland and tasteless to him, the bread slowly working its way down his throat to land heavily in his stomach. He took another bite and absentmindedly chewed as he watched Alan sleep.

Stephen stood off to the side. He watched Robert for a minute, then turned to look at Alan. He found his eyes darting between the two men and had to fight back a smile. To think. All it took was one night to form this kind of bond. A chance meeting between strangers. He was reminded himself of just such a meeting a long time ago. Two awkward strangers, still learning about who they were, finding love and, a blink later, a lifetime had passed. He caught Robert staring at him with raised brows. “Sorry,” he apologized, blinking himself back to the present. “Just lost in an old memory.”

Robert nodded. He had a pretty good idea where Stephen’s thoughts had been drifting. He seemed a country away…

“Let’s get you to Alan’s flat,” Stephen said quickly, before the melancholy could start to set in as it always did when he thought of his better half.

Robert nodded once, then stood. He reached out and covered Alan’s hand with his own, hesitant to let go and leave. He knew the best thing to do now was to get some sleep. He tried to figure out how many hours straight he had been up, naps notwithstanding, but he stopped counting when he neared thirty.

“Alrighty, so keys.” Stephen turned to open the drawer that held Alan’s belongings and started to look for his keys. He turned back around when he heard Robert softly clear his voice to speak.

Robert was standing with a set of keys in his hand. “I have a key.” His voice was barely a whisper and Stephen noticed that he glanced towards Alan when he said it.

“I guess young Alan has some secrets he has yet to share.” Stephen picked up Alan’s trench coat and held it out to Robert. “Put this on. Traditional English weather outside and all.”

With a shaky hand, Robert reached out and took the jacket, finally letting go of Alan’s hand to shrug it on. Then he paused for a second, looking back at the empty hand on the bedsheets.

Stephen saw the conflict in the young man’s face and nodded with a smile. “I will meet you out front, let me bring the car round.”

Robert waited till the door shut before the tears rolled slowly down his face. He thought that he really needed some rest before he completely fell apart. He pulled the jacket tightly around him and bent over Alan, giving him a quick kiss to his dry lips, then pressed a kiss to his Alan’s head. He buried his nose in Alan’s hair and tried to smell the familiar scents, but all he could take in was the disinfectant smell of the hospital. “I miss you, please wake up.” Robert froze for one hopeful minute, Alan’s hair tickling his nose, before he finally sighed and placed one last gentle kiss on his temple. "I'll be back soon." He pulled away and wrapped the jacket tightly around his body, sad that it smelled more of Alan than Alan did, then he walked slowly out of the hospital room and went to find his ride.
