It took me this long to process the ep enough to give a review that isn't completely filled with squee (but close lol).
I watched the episode a total of 4 times in a 24 hour period...
Reading some of the more harsh reviews (i.e. those that didn't absolutely LOVE it) calmed my squee a little, but I still think this is my favorite of the episodes so far. Though I have always enjoyed things on the more humorous side ;) Even by the 4th watch, I was still giggling like a maniac during most of it.
First off, the episode is just so pretty looking (BC helped lol), but the way it was shot, and the cool camera angles. The fun in editing. It's like its own character, and I really enjoy it.
--Sally! Sad we didn't get to see any Sherlock interaction with her, but I was surprised to see her at all. Wasn't there an article that said she wouldn't be back due to something else she was filming at the same time? Lovely to see her (never thought I would say that!) as was it seeing Lestrade try to kill a tire.
--John broke Sherlock when asking him to be best man. LOL. And the eyeball ewww!
--The best man speech that never ended. HA! I just loved what they packed into it. And I try to imagine him describing all the cases to his audience in detail. Poor people. The speech really humanized him to me, and I liked that. And I like how aware he is of his shortcomings, which he mostly ignores, but did apologize to everyone.
--Mary knows just how to handle both of the boys. And she can tell when Sherlock is fibbing. Not even John can do that all the time. Uugh, stop making her so likable!
--The Drunk Scene. Just wow. In 2 hours?? I had to pause a lot to just laugh and laugh at things. As well as to read his drunk deductions. "Deaded" and "Sitty Thing" are my favs. And Lestrade getting them out of the drunk tank. Startled Sherlock=awesome.
--The Case...eeh...It seemed like it stretched belief a bit. Mainly because I don't think the belts were that tight. But I do love how Sherlock 2.0 (aka Tom)'s guess of a Meat Dagger was pretty accurate - providing the skewer was the weapon. It probably wasn't, but I loved the parallel, accidental or not! It took a few watches to get the case straight in my head, too. So many clues and pieces spread out over the whole of the ep.
--I continue to love Mary. I went into this season thinking I wouldn't like her as much because, like everyone else, we all have a pretty accurate guess as to the end of the season.
--I liked all the secondary characters (little boy, Shoto, Bainbridge)
--I loved the mood change when Sherlock started piecing things together. I love fun crazy Sherlock, but intense crazy Sherlock is just as enjoyable. I didn't know how much I missed the serious until we were given it. And Mycroft helping him out was brilliant and added a hectic layer to things.
--The ending of the ep hurt. Poor Sherlock. After he finally got close-ish to another person other than John (and Mary), that other person ended up dancing with someone else. And, after Sherlock had made his vow to keep J&M safe, he walks away. Okay, yeah, he'll be back, but still!
Next episode....It is going to be painful, whatever happens. Though, since everyone knows /sarcasm Mary is going to die, it seems so obvious that there has to be more to it than that. And the fact that I heard the cliffie is going to be even worse than Reichenbach...I think her fate won't be told until series 4.
And...I would ramble more, but I need to go to bed :-/
