Shame. Anger. Disbelief.
This country is supposed to be the most resourceful in the world. The tsunami relief was handled better than this rag-tag b.s. organization of the FEDERAL GOVT and their AGENCIES.
I guess it just goes to show that when it comes to terrorists whacking buildings in the richest city in the country, the feds jump and move and get things done. When it comes to poor, impoverished, unimportant areas of the country, read- back country, they cannot be bothered.
Three days? It takes three days or more to get there? That's B.S. FEMA and the emergency services organizations didn't see this one coming? No way.
This is a horror show, and makes me so ashamed.
Who knows how many more people have died these last days because no one was there to help them because there is no management system in place? Who knows how many people have been beaten and raped in the wake of this lawless state?
Where was our government? Where was our president?
I blame the governor of Louisiana for this mess. In order for Federal agencies to come in, the state has to officially give the Feds control. Until then, the Fed's hands are tied. This law was adopted to give states more rights and keep the Federal government from just walking in anytime they want. Of course that also means wasted time if states decide to dilly-dick around and not hand over power.
Personally, I think that the request/authorization for federal aid should have gone in even before Katrina hit the coast. A category 5 hurricane is something you don't want to fuck around with. Major devastation is a guarantee.
And there's also a time for the federal government to surpass the law of the state in order to take the f*ck over and get things organized rather than trying to work with chaos. The fact that there still is no definitive organization, no plan, and no communication with the people stranded. I keep watching The Interdictor, and there still is no help.
And some of the blame does lie with the people who did stay. Yes, there were people who had no money and nowhere to go. But there were shelters set up- the Superdome was a viable option prior to the storm. They didn't have to stay in their homes. And so many did. You cannot deny the power of nature. I guess we humans got a real lesson in where we sit on the totem pole.
