Surgery Redux

Apr 13, 2011 12:47

Almost exactly six years after having my hip removed, the powers that be have decided to put one back in. In two weeks and a day I will go back under the knife and come out with some kind of metal, plastic, and cadaver bone hybrid hip. Supposedly this will give me better mobility and less pain. Let's just say that after the last surgery's debacle I ( Read more... )

Ceramics weren't mentioned at all. This one has has a metal ball to replace the head of my femur and an "ultra-plastic" (his words) as the sleeve. The cadaver bone is going to be used in places to provide better anchoring (I think).

I wonder if any memories of kicking people or soccer balls will be transferred from the cadaver bone. I might start dreaming of footie or something. =p

Thanks, yeah I am doing much better already. As soon as I get started on physical therapy things should get even better. I can't wait.

wait ...is a cadaver bone a bone they got from another person? I had no idea that was an option (though it makes sense if we're transplanting organs, why not bones too?)

Did you get some kind of replacement hip six years ago when they removed the original? I hope your recovery is going well.

No, six years ago they took the hip out and didn't put anything in it's place. They had planned to but they hadn't planned on having to take the whole thing out. After that they said I wasn't a candidate for a hip replacement because they needed to keep checking me every six months to make sure the cancer didn't come back and also because there wasn't anything left to anchor the replacement to.

I guess technology caught up and so they added some cadaver bone as an anchor and put in a bunch of metal and plastic.

Recovery is going well, much better than last time at least. I'm not sure what kind of functionality I'll end up with but if it isn't better than what I had with no hip I'll be kind of pissed. =)
