Major characters did die in Harry Potter. Harry for one (though he came back to life), FRED, and Remus. Granted the movies didn't portray them as MAJOR in the last couple of movies, but Fred and Remus were pretty important and important to the protaganists. All the people they pointed out having died in the battle of Hogwarts did have decent sized roles in the movies...just not the one it was in. You kinda have to look at it from a series wide perspective as it was intended, rather than just a two parter movie.
Also, Harry left the Resurrection Stone in the Forbidden Forest. In the end he only kept the Deathly Hallow he started with, the Invisibility Cloak as it was a family heirloom.
It was, after all a movie though and had to deviate from the books. They did alright for the most part, changing mostly minor parts for dramatic effect. Though I agree that with the epilogue, noone really looked any older to me heh.
