I'm a big fan of the Creative Labs Zen.

I have the 30gb. I didn't really want the video option (only used it once) but I wanted the space.

It plays MP3, WMA, Wav and maybe one other format. The nice part about it, too, is that is works with windows media player, so you can hope around on different computers with it.

The only thing it converts are videos. It takes Divx, too.

The Zen line is probably where I would point you also for a general purpose player. iRiver has also done some very interesting and non-stupid models. Several that probably meet your portability and versatility requirments.

personally the only player of the sort I'll even be considering in the future is the upcomming Pacemaker The price tag is a bit large, but the functionality is something I've been wishing for since digital players got big. Note that it also functions quite effectively as a normal player when set to that mode.

Just bought one, a sony. I've never hooked it up to speakers, but at least in the earphones the sound quality is better than any other portable device I've ever heard. It's the simplest thing ever to use: play/pause, directional, back and option buttons. Oh and it's got volume buttons separate. Takes wmas and mp3s and some other stuff too, but doesn't play dat files, which'd be nice.

Plays videos and pictures too, but you're not interested in those. Cost me... about... err... $130, give or take exchange market ups and downs.
