Initial speculative guess about the larger than normal ants being Carpenter Ants seemed ideal, but I've noted an oddity which has cast some doubt on that ( Read more... )

Carpenter ants do shove the winged ones out - males and queens both - to spread the colony when they think it's warm enough; I do suspect there's a large nest somewhere too close for comfort if you're seeing them often. :/
