If you're only seeing what looks like bumblebees, they're probably carpenter bees... shiny black butts, not fuzzy & striped? Cali has three species of them. Here in MA I had one spring/summer where they kept hatching (appearing) in my basement; HUGE mfs. I'd catch them and bring em outside. If your house has carpenter ants already, it's a distinct possibility. The females will sting, but reluctantly & rarely, I never got stung when catching them. Males don't have a stinger; their defense is flybys. They don't 'nest' as such, they make individual holes in wood... eh you can look em up and see if they match what you're seeing. If Moms isn't too far from you it's not farfetched that you find them in both places.
Fwiw, friends of mine had way worse - wasp nest in the wall, feckin thing was over 5 feet wide and the exterior clapboards were bowing outward from the mass of it. That buzzing sound was the most sinister thing, omg.
