Unsettling the World

First of all: The world has got to settle down with the horrible things. London! My heart goes out to you! (I want to come back and visit, stupid hoodies need to stop burning it!) And Chicago needs to get itself in order, too, because downtown rush hour shootings and Lollapalooza gear thefts are seriously uncool as well ( Read more... )

I've actually been seriously considering going to London sometime next spring, so hearing about the riots was dismaying on even more levels than it would have been otherwise. I told my coworker who lives over there to stay safe and he replied that it's a lot better now, but that Monday was "no fun at all." So either things are just fine, or he was being a total British stereotype and things have maybe been not so okay but either way it sounds like the worst is definitely over.

I had heard some rumbling about stuff in Chicago, but didn't know the specifics. What the hell. What a messed-up world.

You should totally go! Though next spring is going to be kind of close to the Olympics (which I'd also love to see, but at the same time... so many people).

I tend to assume that most Brits are always understating things. And I love them for it. It does seem like it's settled down, though, since most of what I'm seeing in the news is "what now?"

Chicago is a little bit... less stable under Rahm so far. But I think that's just because the city is getting used to not being under a Daley. Though the fact that we didn't manage to get the filming of the final Batman movie is just completely wrong and unforgivable. How did we screw that up? I'm going to be all thrown off, because I know Pittsburgh, and it is clearly not Gotham.

Yeah, I thought it might be a bad time because of the Olympics, but it also might be a good time because of the Olympics, if the city is all set up by then. I was also kind of thinking of going with a tour group, since I don't even know where to begin - I just want to see EVERYTHING - so I figure crowds and booking would be less of an issue.

True... in theory, by that point London should just be sitting there waiting for people to come look at it.

And if my experience is at all indicative... a tour group might not be a bad idea. I'm not a huge fan of being carted around, but at the same time, I spent a pretty significant amount of my time in London being slightly lost and walking around in circles. (Which I was cool with, but I definitely didn't get to see EVERYTHING and the city and I still have a lot of unfinished business. Mainly, I need to go back and show the Tube who's boss. ^_^)
