Anyone still reading this LJ? Anyone still care?
In case the answer is yes, here is what I did this weekend. :-)
Oh, and a week from tomorrow, I officially turn "old". Agghhh...do not want. Why can't I just skip this birthday???
I had an absolute blast this weekend hanging out with my friend Jen, and going to MegaCon. Friday night we went to a brewpub for dinner and laid our plans for Saturday, which turned out to be A Very Good Thing.
I’ve been hearing horror stories all weekend about this year’s MegaCon and the appalling lack of planning and crowd control. I’m so thankful to say that Jen and I were incredibly lucky. We got there early, and although we had to stand in line to get in, it wasn’t any longer a wait than I would have expected. (Although I remain somewhat horrified by the fact that no one at the convention center checked Jen’s bag - or anyone’s bag for that matter. Talk about a catastrophe waiting to happen).
Once we got inside, we hurried first to Skottie Young’s booth, in the hope of getting commissioned art from him. Unfortunately he was already booked up - I hadn’t factored Friday’s attendance into consideration, which in hindsight was stupid of me. But once we realized that getting art wasn’t going to be an option, we just started exploring the floor and having fun.
The morning and early afternoon hours were crowded, but not terribly so. We were able to work our way up and down the aisles without too many problems. It was difficult to stop and take anyone’s picture though, because there was just nowhere to stand where you a) weren’t in someone’s way and b) didn’t have a mass of humanity behind your subject as a backdrop. But I saw some amazing cosplay, and there were a lot of people I wish I could have stopped and asked for their picture, but the crowds just didn’t allow for it.
I bought a truckload of comics - about $60 worth, and barely scratched the surface of my wish list. Still, it was SOOOO much fun to go through the boxes and exclaim out loud with delight over a particularly good find. I agonized over a few trades that I didn’t end up getting, and I have a couple regrets on that score, but for the most part I came away very happy with my pile o’ loot. :-)
And I got to meet Tumblr users captainshellhead, vibraniumstark, and tastyrepulsorboots, which was fun. :-) That was toward the end of the afternoon though, and by then Jen and I were starting to wilt. We’d also reached the end of our tolerance for the massive crowds, so we decided to head out.
Saturday night we went to a Chinese food buffet (a post-MegaCon tradition!), then indulged ourselves with ice cream and Easy A when we got home. This morning it was awesome blueberry pancakes, then the 3-1/2 hour drive back home (with some choice swearing at slow drivers who insist on riding in the left-hand lane of the interstate).
My dog won’t leave me alone, my laundry is in the wash, and I’m drinking the last bottle of Mountain Dew I had been hoarding in the fridge, possibly having saved it for this very day without ever realizing that’s what I was doing. And I predict that I will be very lazy tonight and probably order pizza for dinner, read my shiny new comics, watch Cosmos at 9:00 and then fall into bed in an exhausted stupor.
So all in all, an awesome weekend. A+ would do again. :-D
