The first time Ray noticed Fraser walking out of the Music Box Theater, it was three in the afternoon on a Tuesday. The red serge was hard to miss, even going 40 on a busy street. It made Ray curious but he couldn’t bring himself to ask Fraser what the deal was with seeing a movie in the middle of the day. He had to admit to himself that he was afraid of the answer. Ray didn’t want to know if Fraser was meeting someone or if pure loneliness had driven him to do something where being alone didn’t eat at you so. Ray knew that feeling. He’d been there himself more times than he could count. He’d tried a lot of things to make that feeling go away. Movies were one of the things that had made him feel less alone, less like a loser. Ray had never been one who was weird about going to the movies alone because his mother had ingrained him that you didn’t talk in movies, no matter what. Besides, maybe Fraser just wanted to get away from Turnbull or the Ice Queen. Lord knows he would need to.

Ray didn’t mean to start following Fraser but he eventually found himself waiting five minutes after the movie had started then going in after him. After he realized Fraser wasn’t meeting anyone inside, it was hard leave. Sitting five rows back, Ray would sip his Sprite and make up reasons for why Fraser had chosen that week’s movie. Old Yeller was a gimme, not only was it heart string tugging, but Ray knew Fraser had a soft spot for kids and animals. Gone With the Wind was a confusing choice but after watching it, Ray decided that it was the fact it was a classic and the grand majesty would totally appeal to Fraser. To Kill a Mockingbird made Fraser tear up and flush with injustice. Ray couldn’t help thinking about little Fraser losing his mom and wondered if Fraser was having some of the same thoughts. The Desk Set made Fraser roar with laughter, and as Ray had never seen it, he actually watched the movie instead of Fraser for the most part. Partly because he wanted to see what could make Fraser laugh so hard, but mostly because it was a damn good movie. Casablanca had the hopeless romantic in both of them sighing. For weeks Ray would follow Fraser, seeing whatever movie he was seeing. The only time he skipped was the week A Street Car Named Desire was playing. Even Ray had limits. Sometimes he barely watched the movie, instead watching Fraser’s every reaction. Other times, he got caught up in the movie; especially if it was one he’d never seen or hadn’t seen in years. That is eventually what got him caught.

He knew he was busted when his eyes adjusted to the bright sunlight and he was staring straight at a red jacket. “Um, hey Frase. Fancy seeing you here.”

“Hello Ray. Had I known you wanted to see this revival of Rocky, I most surely would have invited you.” Fraser pulled at his collar nervously. He went back to standing at attention, after noticing but not noticing the looks he was getting from the other people leaving the theater.

Ray was relieved he’d been caught at movie it was no surprise to find him watching. He shuddered involuntarily at the thought that Fraser might have caught him last week leaving Breakfast at Tiffany’s, although really Ray had been surprised at how good it was. He had really related to her reinventing herself. He’d done that too. It was just that it was not a movie anyone would have expected to catch him until you thought about it hard enough. Ray bet Fraser would have picked up on the similarities though.

Still, he would have had to make up some kind of excuse on the fly and he was horrible at doing that. Ray made a mental note to come up with some excuses to have handy if he was ever caught again. The fact that he even had that thought was crazy because he should have learned his lesson here and stopped. But Ray knew his own nature and knew that he would keep following Fraser to the movies. He also knew Fraser would totally have no issue with Ray joining him at the movies, but something stopped Ray from asking. It probably said something about his stalker tendencies.

“No biggie Frase. Saw it playing, and thought I’d hit it on a whim. You wanna get some dinner?” His first thought was to distract Fraser from anything he might say, and dinner was a good excuse to change the subject.

“That would be lovely, Ray. I think Angelina’s would be a wonderful place for us to go. And going early, we should have no problem getting seated immediately.” Ray just watched as Fraser turned his Stetson around in his hands, as if he thought Ray might change his mind.

“Sure, my car is right around the corner.” Ray started heading that way, not looking back just assuming Fraser was right behind him. From the quick steps he could hear, Fraser was only a few steps back. Once they were in the car, Fraser played with the radio, making Ray twitchy. “Something wrong Fraser?”

Fraser looked up quickly, startled at being caught out. “Why no! I just realized I was very presumptive, and perhaps you had other plans tonight.”

Ray almost chuckled, “Nope, just dinner with you. Remember, I brought it up. In fact, even if we hadn’t run into each other, I probably would have called about dinner. Maybe after we can go back to my place and watch tonight’s hockey game. It’s not teams we really care about, but watching should still be fun.” He looked at Fraser hopefully. Ray had decided that tonight would be the night choices were made.

“That too would be lovely, Ray.” Fraser visibly relaxed at the invitation. He finally put his hat down on his lap and sank back in his seat. “Do you mind if we pick up Diefenbaker after dinner? He’s been on his own all afternoon and I’m afraid that is always a recipe for disaster. He gets bored I believe. Besides, he always enjoys a good hockey game.”

“Not a problem, Frase. I wondered where he was, but I guess the Music Box isn’t a huge fan of wolves as patrons.” Ray didn’t need to look at Fraser to know that he was nodding gravely.

“You are so right, Ray. He didn’t quite understand my leaving him behind this afternoon I’m afraid and was pouting when I left the consulate. After the incident at the theatre across town, he shouldn’t be so surprised.” Fraser started to fiddle with his hat again. “He would really appreciate it if we picked him up.”

“Hey, I said no problem and I meant it. I do draw the line at getting him take-out though. He can eat the kibble under the sink and like it if he is hungry.” As Ray made a left turn, he did wonder when he had started keeping food for Fraser’s wolf at his house. The mutt also had a bed in the corner, now that he thought about it. Sure, that had started as a way to keep fur off his couch, but still. Just how often do you have food and a bed for your friend’s dog? Even your best friend’s dog. That should have been a clue to him a long time ago.

Ray found place to park only a block from the restaurant, a testament to the transitional time of day. As he and Fraser walked the short distance to Angelina’s, Ray couldn’t help but notice Fraser’s nervousness, which was just as bad as his own. He must have felt that something was in air, the change.

As they were seated (Fraser was right and the early hour meant no waiting), Ray couldn’t help but watch Fraser out of the corner of his eye. Despite his nervousness, Fraser was still the prettiest guy Ray had ever seen, including way too much porn, straight and gay.

“Thanks.” Ray accepted both the seat and the menu graciously, something he knew he’d picked up from Fraser. They sat in silence for nearly five minutes as they examined the menu in detail. Ray settled pretty quickly on the spicy shrimp and a glass of the house white wine. This was not a night forgo alcohol. Fraser put his menu down too and the waitress came over immediately. Ray placed his order and Fraser ordered the tomato risotto and a glass of milk, which was pretty typical of him. Ray wondered, as he often did, if Fraser purposely ordered things he knew he would have trouble getting up North. When he ordered the milk, he looked pointedly at Ray, who chose to ignore the look.

After the waitress walked away, Ray cleared his throat, “So did you like the movie?”

“Yes, it was quite good. I wasn’t sure I’d like violence, but really it is about much more than that.”

“Yeah, it is a study on the human condition.” Ray rolled his eyes a bit.

Fraser clasped his hands on the table, “Yes! Exactly!” He totally missed R ay’s sarcasm. “Rocky was a man who had lost faith in himself and the world and he got it back.”

They moved on to talk about lighthearted things while waiting for their food, spending majority of the time on Turnbull’s latest antics. Away from the consulate, Fraser almost always loosened up and frequently laughed just as hard as Ray at Turnbull’s goofiness. If it wasn’t for the fact that it often made Fraser’s own life more difficult, Ray thought he even enjoyed most of Turnbull’s bizarreness, as it made his boring days a little less so. After the food came, Ray abruptly switched back to the previous topic.

“How come you have never lost your faith?” Ray glanced up at Fraser, watching for a reaction. He wasn’t disappointed as Fraser flinched noticeably. He could tell Fraser knew exactly what he was talking about. Fraser also didn’t answer right away. Ray took a bite of his food and just waited.

“Who says I haven’t? I think we have all had those moments when we doubt our place in the world. The difference, I think, is that my doubts have all been momentary.” Fraser looked down at his plate like it was the most fascinating thing ever.

Ray couldn’t resist pushing a bit, “But doesn’t it get to you? They posted you here, to another country, so they wouldn’t have to deal with you. That has to grate sometimes.”

Fraser stopped with his fork half way to his lips and put down his hand, “I’ll be honest, Ray. I have had my moments but I realize that if I really was unhappy here, I could resign my post and move back to Canada. My land has been in my family for almost one hundred years and where I live, helping your neighbors is the most important thing about surviving. But truly, I’m not unhappy. I just wish things were different at times; an exercise, I realize, that is futile.’

Ray nodded as he chewed. He knew that feeling. He just hadn’t realized Fraser did too. “Well, if you left, I’d miss ya.” Ray cleared his throat awkwardly. “Just in case you didn’t already know that.”

Fraser stopped eating, “Thank you, Ray. While I was pretty sure of that, it is nice to have confirmation. You should know you are always welcome at my cabin, no matter if I can accompany you or not.” He looked at Ray earnestly.

“As if I would go up there without you,” Ray nearly guffawed. “Please, I would need an expert so I wouldn’t end up dead on the first night.”

Fraser cleared his throat this time, “You know Ray, you often put yourself down but while you may not be wilderness fit, you are certainly not in bad shape. I’m sure if it came down to it, you would make sure you survived. You have a lot of common sense. And truly that is what matters up North.”

“Are you saying I look good, Frase?’ Ray got a cheeky grin when Fraser blushed. “Gee, I never knew you cared.” He felt like pushing a bit, flirting harder than normal.

“Of course I care Ray. I consider you my best friend. I hope you know that.”

Fraser missed the point Ray was making again. Although in this case, Ray wondered if he was doing it on purpose because it was easier than acknowledging the world around him was shifting, changing, perhaps getting more complicated. Ray decided to let it go, for now. Although, he did like hearing Fraser considered him his best friend. They finished their meals, both declining desert.

Ray felt oddly anxious to get back to his place. He knew that neither of them had to work the next day, so once they got Dief, they could spend the whole night at his place if they wanted, whatever happened. He signaled for the check when Fraser wiped his mouth, and they paid. The speed with which Fraser made for the car made Ray feel like he realized where the night was heading too.

Ray waited in the car as Fraser headed into the consulate to get Diefenbaker. He had also told Fraser to grab a change of clothes, knowing that he wouldn’t do it without being prompted; not wanting to be presumptive. No matter what happened, Ray didn’t want him thinking about going home later as it always cut their evenings short. He didn’t have to wait long before Fraser bounded down the steps with both the wolf and a ruck sack in tow.

“Ready?” Ray waited until Fraser was buckled in and Dief was settled in the backseat, and then drove across town to his place. As he parked, Fraser chattered on about inane things, from station gossip to upcoming events at the consulate. As they headed up to his apartment, Ray was glad he had picked up before heading out.

Once inside, Dief headed straight for his bed and Fraser headed for the sink to fill Dief’s bowls. Ray shook his head at Fraser’s unflagging sense of responsibility as he tossed his jacket over a chair and his keys on the kitchen table.

Knowing Fraser would be busy for a few minutes, Ray popped into his bedroom to make sure it was picked up. Throwing a stray shirt into the dirty clothes basket after pulling up the comforter on his bed, then he hit the bathroom too. Ray was back out in the living room just as Fraser sat down in front of the TV. Popping the set on as he passed, Ray grabbed them both beers from the fridge. “I think the TV is already on the right station.” He sat next to Fraser on the couch, intentionally closer than he needed to be, although if Fraser noticed he made no indication.

“Cheers.” Ray toasted Fraser.

They settled in to watch the game, but every few minutes Ray stole a glance at Fraser’s face, lit up by the soft glow of the TV as evening approached. Somewhere near the end of the first half, he realized he had no idea of the score because he’d been so nervous. Ray finally had enough. “Frase,” Ray turned, putting his beer down on the coffee table.

Fraser turned quickly, “Yes, Ray?” He put his own beer down, turning towards Ray.

“I need you to close your eyes and promise you won’t freak out on me.” Ray was kind of shocked at how nervous he felt. He watched as Fraser nodded and closed his eyes without question, a testament to how much he trusted Ray.

Ray moved closer to Fraser, breathing in his natural, woodsy smell. He clasped his shoulder, and leaned in, pressing his lips against Fraser’s. Immediately, Fraser opened his mouth, putting his tongue into Ray’s mouth. Ray was way more thankful than he expected. Deep down he had hoped this would be Fraser’s reaction, but he had been worried it wouldn’t be. Apparently, Fraser had been having the same worries he’d been having.

“Thank god, Ray. I was nervous we would never get to this point. I’m afraid I don’t read people very well, and thus I’m not very good at making first moves.” Fraser paused briefly to adjust his body, and then leaned back, taking Ray with him. Ray grabbed the shoulders of Fraser’s tunic and pulled, indicating it should come off. It was shrugged to the ground next to the couch, an act that that shocked Ray enough to make him freeze. Then Fraser licked his neck, and his mind was right back in the action. Ray slid his hands under Fraser’s undershirt, to smooth over the warm skin on their way to rock hard nipples.

Fraser abruptly sat up, nearly knocking Ray to the floor. “Ray, I think we would be much more comfortable in your bedroom.” Ray carefully stood up, extending his hand, wanting to get them moving as quickly as possible before either of them came to their senses. Fraser took his hand, leaning down to grab his jacket as he stood up. As they moved toward the bedroom, Fraser stopped at the hall closet and hung up his tunic. He turned towards Ray, who was waiting for him in the hall, and shoved him against the wall. He reached for the buttons on Ray’s shirt. As he opened each one, he pressed kisses to Ray’s chest. For his part, Ray moved them from the wall and walked them backwards down the hall until they reached the bedroom door.

“No take backs now, Frase.” Ray wanted Fraser to know where this was going. “Just to be clear, I need you to fuck me.”

Fraser kissed Ray hard, “I think I can do that.”

Ray took off most his clothes, letting them fall to floor, only stopping when he realized Fraser wasn’t joining him, just watching. “Hey, Frase, this isn’t a floor show. Get with the program.”

Fraser shook his head as if to clear it, “Right, I should be taking my clothing off.” He stripped off his t-shirt, and sat on the edge on bed to unlace his boots. Soon he was down to what Ray thought of as the ‘pumpkin pants’ as it was too warm long johns. Ray had taken off everything but his own boxer briefs and walked over to where Fraser was sitting on the bed.

“Need some help with those?” Fraser’s voice was a whisper. Ray ran his hands over Fraser’s head, tangling his hands in the thick hair, messing it up. With a soft shove, he sent Fraser back on the bed and straddled him. “I think ‘I’ should give you a hand with those pants.” Ray’s hands went to Fraser’s waist, hooking his fingers in the waistband of his pants, moving to the button. He went to unfasten them, but needed Fraser’s help when the mechanism confounded him. Ray couldn’t resist the nearness of Fraser’s hands, and sucked a finger into his mouth, mainly to hear the moan he knew Frase would make.

‘Ray, you should know that is making me crazy.” Fraser’s voice was raspy, not a way he sounded very often.

“If you are still able to form complete sentences, I am clearly doing something wrong.” Ray moved on to Fraser’s neck. He leaned his head back, giving Ray even more access. Ray could feel Fraser’s arousal through his pants on his own stomach. He reached down and grasped Fraser’s dick through the ridiculous pants. “Off, these pants need to be off.”

Fraser grinned up at him. “You think, Ray?” He leaned up and nibbled at Ray’s ear while laughing. “I think it would be more fun for both of us if you helped.”

After Fraser undid the pants, Ray pulled on them till they were off. Knowing Fraser, he laid them over the chair in the corner so they wouldn’t wrinkle. Ray rejoined Fraser on the bed, running his hands up the legs of Fraser’s boxers. He could only go so far, but he could tell the teasing was breaking Fraser’s normally cool reserve.

Fraser slid his hands into the back of Ray’s boxer briefs, grabbing his ass. He ran a finger down the crease, catching on the hole. Ray’s whole body jolted like he’d been shocked.

“This is part of the ultimate goal, yes?” Fraser seemed hesitant, as though he’d done something wrong.

Ray wanted to reassure him, “Oh yeah, you’re good. Really good.”

Fraser relaxed, and tilted his head to catch Ray’s mouth. Things sped up pretty quickly at that point. Ray pushed off his boxer briefs, and tugged down Fraser’s boxer shorts, tossing them on the floor. Before Fraser could react, Ray captured his cock in his mouth. Fraser gasped and seemed to be using every ounce of self-control he had not to thrust.

Fraser surprised Ray by flipping them over. He pushed Ray’s legs up and used his own tongue to find Ray’s hole. He pushed in, and Ray groaned loudly. He could feel the stretching as Fraser continued to push forward. Afraid he would come too soon, Ray shoved Fraser off, and turned, moving back to Fraser’s cock. It seemed to swell even more in Ray’s mouth. He sucked gently, running his hand up Fraser’s stomach. Ray swirled his tongue around him, enjoying the hardness. Fraser groaned then gasped out, “Unless we move to the main event, the evening may soon be over.”

Ray grinned around Fraser’s cock, and then got off him with a final suck to rummage in the nightstand for condoms and lube, giving Fraser a moment to collect himself, taking a moment himself. He tossed them on the bed next to Fraser then crawled back on the bed, lying down with his back arched toward Fraser.

Fraser ran his hand down Ray’s side, almost in reverence. He then uncapped the lube and wet his fingers. He hauled Ray closer to him, shoving his hand in-between Ray’s legs to reach his ultimate goal. Ray groaned as Fraser’s thick fingers stretched his hole. He pushed one finger in and twisted it, seemingly just to hear Ray’s gasp. Ray hadn’t done this in a long time but remembered how good it could feel.

Ray grinned at him over his shoulder, almost in a challenge. “Well Fraser, gonna get things going?” Fraser rewet his fingers and put them back in Ray’s hole. Ray groaned again and shoved back, trying to get Fraser to go faster. He’d done this before. Not for years, but before in his punk days. He told Fraser so.

“Proper preparation, Ray. Be patient.” Fraser did go a little faster though. He apparently thought Ray was ready after another moment and another finger though because he turned him over on his stomach, placing a reverent kiss on the small of Ray’s of back then moved between Ray’s legs. Fraser slid on a condom and pulled Ray to his knees. “Ready?” When Ray nodded jerkily, Fraser lined up his cock and started to slowly push. The burn was intense, making Ray moan out loud. Fraser stayed still for a moment, letting Ray adjust to the feel of him.

Ray started to push back. “Ready Frase, go for it.” With that, Fraser began to slowly thrust, holding on to Ray hips. Both of them groaned with the motion. With every push, Ray groaned a bit louder, moving with each drive of Fraser’s hips. Ray balanced on one hand as he ran the other up Fraser’s arm, with a moan. Fraser reached around to grasp Ray’s cock, pulling in unison to his thrusts. With a bit of maneuvering, their lips met quickly before Fraser started to thrust with urgency. His breath was warm as he panted harshly against Ray’s neck. Ray gasped and moved backwards, trying to make as much contact with Fraser as possible. He could feel Fraser’s chest pressed against his back and his own heart beating hard.

“You feel wonderful, Ray.” Fraser was nearly breathless as he thrust, all the while pulling at Ray’s cock. Ray braced himself on the bed and could feel his orgasm start to build, so he thrust backwards harder. Fraser let him guide the speed as they moved, Ray pushed back as he felt his own orgasm crest.

“Gonna come Frase.” Ray had no idea why he wanted him to know but he did. Fraser carefully pulled out and flipped him over on the bed. Ray made a whimper of protest but shut up fast when Fraser pulled his cock in to his mouth. Ray came almost immediately with a shout, coating them both with sperm as he came too much for Fraser to swallow it all. Ray didn’t rest though; he quickly flipped Fraser over and pulled off the condom. “Wanna come, Frase?”

When Fraser just groaned, Ray pumped Fraser’s cock a few times then pulled it into his mouth, ignoring the spermicidal taste from the condom. Ray swore Fraser grew even more in his mouth. Fraser groaned again and spilled in his mouth. Ray nearly choked but knew Fraser would never let him do it again if that happened so he stayed calm. After swallowing a few times, Ray moved up the bed. Lying down beside Fraser, he just smiled. Fraser brushed his hair out of his eyes to look at Ray. Ray could see Fraser’s eyes clearly, and in them he saw the wilderness.

“Come North with me, Ray.” Fraser looked hopefully at Ray as he awaited an answer. Ray just grinned as that sounded like a proposal to him.

“I think that would be cool, Frase.” Ray ran hand down Fraser’s face. “Think we could make some changes to your cabin so I have an indoor bathroom?”

Fraser moved to hold Ray close to him. “I think I could do that.”
