Some pretty sentiments, but valid? I'm not sure.

"You lie and deceive
A world war can be won"

Is simply not true.

As for the rest of it, the Soviets were hardly benign. There was no moral equivalence between the two sides: imagine a Soviet Dylan - he'd last slightly less long than a Prague Spring.

The Cold War had to be fought. The disengagement of the intelligentsia merely left the fighting in the hands of the conservative nutjobs.

Firstly, my apologies for the length of time taken to respond. I'm working 40 hours and studying 30 at the minute so my free time is very much limited.

I may be misinterpreting your point here, but I took Dylan to be objecting to his then government which he felt had "lie[d] and deceive[d]" America. A world war wasn't going to be won, morally or otherwise.

There may be some'pretty sentiments'in Dylan's words but I maintain that most of them are relevant today re our own government's failure to be truthful about why we invaded Iraq.

I'm not just a naive tree-hugging hippy. Half my home town is out there including some close friends. My 17 year-old female cousin is just about to go. If I was going I'd want to know the truth. Not that I'd like to stand over Tony Blair's "grave till I'm sure that [he's] dead". Although, I could be tempted with Bush. ;-)

Interesting response. (If you were a naive tree-hugger, I would not have bothered commenting in the first place ( ... )
