i always thought of them more as godflesh via mogwai or low more then traditional shoegaze.

could be , I just heard the same aspects in jesu that I would get out of the bands I (possibly quite wrongly) think of ad shoegaze . the dreamy fuzzy distorted melodic feel . kind of like stumbling around WAY too drunk at a show where lots of concert-fog is being used .
