Serenity's opening weekend: $10,141,000 (Estimate)
Stealth's opening weekend: $13,251,545

Yes, Stealth opened prime time in the middle of summer. But that doesn't excuse a higher opening weekend than the film that is my Star Wars. At least Stealth only made 30% of its budget domestically. Serenity should be able to reach its $40 mil ( Read more... )

It's a cult hit movie. Stealth had a larger marketing campaign and is a flashy special effects movie. It also had a theme of the USArmy messing up big-time, a theme that sells popularly in foreign crowds.

Sadly, I don't think Serenity looked that good to anyone who didn't already know about Firefly. I'm curious to find out the rate at which DVD sets of Firefly sell now, compared to previously.

Stealth also had a far larger budget: $130 million as compared to Serenity's $40 million. Stealth made a nominal profit, if that. I'll bet that, between domestic box office and DVD sales (of the movie, ignoring any increase in the TV show), Serenity is going to be quite the money maker.

I heard 80 million was the number being bandied about that Serenity would have to make to make it worthwhile.

Is it actually 40?

40 million was the production budget. That doesn't include marketing, I believe (though I'm sure it wasn't terribly pricey, def. not 40 million). 80 million is the point where Universal would start considering a sequel and/or trilogy, so it's a sweet spot to reach for.

I am doing my part! I have seen it twice and paid for it twice despite the movie passes sitting in my purse. Take my money, Joss Whedon. Please take my money and make more shineys.

Star Wars had wide general appeal...it looked interesting to those who saw the trailers. I know people who saw trailers for Serenity and could care less about it...the name of the movie was even hard to remember for them, since the trailer was weak and it easily forgetable. Without knowing about Firefly, that movie just looks like another generic, unimpressive science fiction movie.

Stealth just had better trailers and actors. The trailers were louder and had more special effects, and the actors were more well-known. Although I'm sure there were lame lines in Stealth, I don't remember there being any in the trailer for it...it was a flashy shit-blowing-up trailer, as opposed to Serenity's...which had examples of lame dialogue and was just less exciting.

Hence why I called it my Star Wars. I understand it doesn't have mass appeal. But Stealth was unreasonably terrible (along with Fantastic Four, mind you, but at least that has comic book backing) that it didn't deserve $10 million.

But alas, flashy special effects draw in the big bucks. Hell, I was a sucker once too. I paid money to see Battlefield Earth, for chrissakes.

It just disappoints me.

I seem to remember you raving about how you had to go see Stealth. Flashy special effects seem to draw you in just as much as anyone else. You can't really blame people for doing what you've done before (Only they have to pay to see most movies).

Serenity isn't everyone's cup of tea, just as Stealth and Fantastic Four weren't yours. Isn't it odd to expect everyone to enjoy what you enjoy, when you make fun of what everyone else likes?
