i've been watching far too much tv this weekend and thinking too much, but the preview for next week's installment of the jane austenathon is for "jane austen regrets" where she's looking back near the end of her short (and unmarried and childless life). in the clip she says something like "the only way to find mr. darcy is to make him up." oh man ( Read more... )

Good God. Shit like that gives hope to people who think they deserve the Best Of All Possible Options. Wrong as all outdoors, that concept.

That's why she was Childless and Unmarried, of course--her ego and sense of entitlement was so huge it could not be beaten, even by the Monster of Common Sense and Decency.

what?? that's the exact OPPOSITE of the meaning that i take. it seems clear that mr. darcy is a fantasy, hence, you can't spend your whole sitting around waiting for him. i don't know why that's hopeful, well, it's actually hopeful because it shows people being hopeful about perfection is folly so they can be hopeful about creating some imperfect reality.

i'm not sure about her being childless and unmarried. i dunno if it's really sad because she never found someone and didn't get to have love/sex/children/whatever else marriage provided at that point. or, if it's awesome that she wasn't willing to settle. it's probably neither and she woke up one day and oh shit, i'm alone forever *shrugeroo*. guess that's what the movie on sunday is about. woohoo!

I did get your point, you know. My point was this (albeit it slightly sub-textual): some people probably take that shit as honest and sincere.

And unwillingness to settle is never awesome; all it ever is is retarded.

ha, well, maybe i have more faith in people than that. "no, in fact, she was not advocating a create your own mr. darcy through nagging, withholding sex, and other forms of manipulation."

i think unwillingness to settle can be awesome. if it's self defeating, it's probably dumb. but like, i should never have gone to GW, but i sorta "settled." i think it was actually dumb for me to do that and not set my sights higher (or follow through when i had set my sights higher...). sometimes you do need to strive for a better situation.
