Fun hand from a unit game 7/15/2017

Yes, I'm still technically on LJ! But spend most of my Internet time-wasting on Facebook and FlyerTalk these days, so haven't really been reading here.

Both vul, in 4th seat you hold:

QJ2
A63
JT643
KQ

Your LHO opens 1NT, announced as 14-16, followed by two passes. Your strong NT defense is DONT in both seats. Your call?

followup question )

bridge

Bridge is not my game, but the 2C-2D sequence is pretty entertaining.

In the defense to 1NT that they were using (a fairly common one) the double showed an unspecified single suited hand. 2C is artificial, effectively asking "what is your suit?"

I find it funny that Villain, having gotten that meaningless bid, then made a worse play than accepting it. He can't know that but it still amuses me.

I'm kinda confused (or think you might still be :-) )

What do you mean "than accepting it"? The 2C is essentially a forced bid, to give the doubler and opportunity to name what his suit actually is. He can't pass 2C because it doesn't actually promise any clubs.

Villain's mistake was in balancing instead of just defending, especially since RHO (which was me) telegraphed that he had a marginal pass and almost made an invite, and in deciding to treat JTxxx as a single-suited hand worthy of mention.

Having decided to double the rest of the auction is pretty much automatic. Villain's partner can't really leave the double in with no values, and absent that is basically forced to bid 2C to give Villain the chance to pass (if his unspecified suit turns out to be clubs) or to name his actual "suit" (which in this case was diamonds).

I thought, "Isn't this a clear pass? But why did he post this then?"

Glad to see I was right :-).
