My beloved, whiny, 11 yr old cat Elliott came down with feline diabetes after we arrived in the US. He's been in great health all these years and then BAM. We think it was the stress of moving. I'd put it inside a grocery bag, tie off the bag, and put it in the garbage, not the compost. Rats can carry disease.

Also- go Elliott!

Elliott sounds like he has recovered from the stress and is doing terrifically.

My older cat brings us dead rats and some birds in various states of "dead". Yes, rats carry diseases, but dead things are terrific for enriching the earth. I get a paper towel and a shovel, place over the little body and then ease it into the shovel. I go to the garden, put the body to the side, and dig a grave. I put the little creature back into the Earth and say a prayer for its soul and to the Great Mother for receiving it back to Her and then cover it up. If I think a cat or something else might dig it up, I put rocks over it.

Dust to dust and back to the Mother.

I used to do that as a kid, but we rent and don't have any garden tools (landlord does the yard). Next house will get its cemetary!
