Oh, I can do that as well... must be something us clever people have =P But seriously, I know how people feel ven when they don't sometimes. Only in hostile situations, really, or when I'm toying with them...
I think that many people do that on a subconscious level, change our outer 'self' to better fit with whoemever we are with. Well, at least that's what I did. It's a personality shift. it doesn't mean you don't have a 'you' but rather different traits that lie within us emerge when we are with different types of people.
Doing it on purpose isn't anything big really. By analyzing people and seeing what makes them tick, you can avoid conflicts, and reach that person on a more relationship-type level, one that they can relate to.
Problem is, ususally even though you are adapting to their perception of what you think (or they do) want to see, you ususally don't become close friends with them since they never see the real 'you'. o_O
I think I just said what YOU just said in different words xD.
Apparently people've told me that I have this 'trustfulness' about me, and the way I act that makes people trust me really easily and feel secure around me.
I think the same as you though, best trait has gotta be getting to make people liking me, although I never deceive, somehow I just make people feel 'good' talking to me. I can read people really well, and adjust my personality to suit more what that person is themself. I only do that to people I actually want to like though.
Really, I only deceive at school where I can manipulate people (mostly teachers) to doing what I want so easily it's kinda funny how many times I've managed to blatantly skip school with no repercussions, handed in essays a month overdue and still get all my teachers thinking I'm a saint.
